I'd have to say my favorite book read during the last year is Animal, Vegetable, Mineral by Barbara Kingsolver. It reopened my eyes to the issues we're facing and to healthier eating.
I loved this book too -- I loved the way they used elements of comic-books in the story too. Alexie's first YA book = wonderful! I hope he continues to write more in this (and really any genre). Have you read his other books? He's an author I would happily read his grocery lists. His poetry is also good/thought-provoking (and I'm not normally a big poetry fan).
Marie: I have read one other book by Alexie, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, a collection of short stories that he wrote. I didn't realize it was a collection of short stories until I was finished, so since I thought it was a novel, it didn't connect too well. However, as a collection of short stories, it fits together nicely. I've heard about his poetry, but have yet to read any. Any recommendations?
I really enjoyed Caramelo by Sandra Cisneros. It;s about a Mexican family that has immigrated to Chicago and the experiences of the family going back and forth over the summers to visit the grandparents in Mexico. Beautifully written and very funny some of the sentences are just gorgeous.
So far this year, it's hands down, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. I think it's going to be the top book club book of the year.
My cousin placed a hold at her public library in Ohio yesterday, and she was 235 on the holds list for the consortium of libraries.
I loved the book. If you like 84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff, you'll like it. And, if you want to know more, yesterday I posted my blog review on my blog,

Um...maybe I shouldn't have asked the question. I've had so much garbage in my personal life I haven't done as much quality reading as I like to do. I've read a lot of easy reads and a lot of things I wouldn't recommend like The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls or The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin or The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards. I could go on with a list of books I've read in the past year that I would NOT recommend. My book group read my one of my favorite books of all time Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner a few months ago. Does it count as a book I've read this year if I've read it 5 times before? I guess its my post, I say it does =). I'm going with Crossing to Safety.
This year my favorite is definitely The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. It made my choice easy for me by making me fall in love with it! If we're talking last August to now, though, a full 12 months, The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro still wins as it has become one of my all-time favorites.
