Hello Book Bloggers--
I am so excited to tell you about one of our most anticipated books of the Spring 2009 season: A Child's Journey Out of Autism by Leeann Whiffen. It is one family's story of struggle and triumph over one of the most alarming disorders among children today--Autism. This isn't Jenny McCarthy who has an income most people dream of--this is a mother who could be anyone, who did whatever it took to keep her family together and help her son come through Autism. I've included the full press release below so you all have a sense of what this book is about.
Even if you are normally a fiction reviewer, or you don't generally read this type of non-fiction, I hope you will take a look at this incredible story. I have 15 ARCs of this one--with a very STRICT posting schedule in April (National Austism Awareness Month). Please email me with any questions, or to request an ARC: danielle.jackson@sourcebooks.com
Please take a look at the cover, so you can see what I mean about one family's incredible journey.
Mother and Child’s Journey Reveals Cure for Autism
Touching True Story Provides Roadmap for Families Seeking Autism Treatment
“Just 15 years ago, one out of every 10,000 children was diagnosed with Autism. Today it is one in every 150. And the rate is increasing….” – Autism Research Institute
Leeann Whiffen was just 23 years old when her son Clay was born. She and her husband, Sean, were like most Americans, struggling with a modest budget to provide for their kids and build a healthy middle-class family life. It all changed when Clay began to slip away. After several months and several misdiagnoses, Clay grew more withdrawn and unresponsive. Then at two years old, he was diagnosed with Autism, and the Whiffen family’s world was turned upside down.
In a frantic struggle, the Whiffens tried every treatment they could afford, and many that they couldn’t, trying to find a cure for the condition that reportedly has no cure. They’d mortgaged their lives and savings on treatments they weren’t even sure could help. But today, Clay Whiffen is eight years old and medically certified as completely off the Autism spectrum. He’s doing well in school and his teachers are unaware he ever had the condition. His story is a source of inspiration and hope for everyone.
Leeann Whiffen’s poignant memoir, A Child’s Journey Out of Autism (ISBN; 978-14022-1838-5: March 2009; $14.99 US / $15.99 CAN; Parenting) is the story of a loving family with an autistic child, a heartbreaking and heartwarming struggle for his treatment, and a medically confirmed recovery. It is a message of hope for the multitude of families with autistic members—that are not rich or famous—and that persevere daily to help their autistic loved one. It is an inspirational story for any person who’s ever gone to any length to sacrifice for someone they loved.
The Whiffens’ journey not only details their compelling struggle, it reveals a sympathetic community of parents and advocates, passionately fighting for one another as they fight for their own children; and a medical research environment that is still alarmingly far from consensus. More than just one family’s story, A Child’s Journey is a touchstone for issues that are now controversial flashpoints in the Autism community. It raises critical questions in the on-going debate about Autism treatment:
• Early Detection: Necessity or Pitfall?
• Autism’s Causes: Is the Establishment Looking in the Wrong Direction?
• The GFCF Diet: Too Good to Be True?
• The Multi-Disciplined Approach: Is Standardization Even Possible?
• Federal Funding: Does Anyone Even Know What’s Happening?
Told with the page-turning intensity of a medical thriller, A Child’s Journey Out of Autism is an important story for a nation still coming to grips with the ever-growing numbers of autistic children, and for a society still navigating a minefield of controversy while it inches toward a cure; a touching true story that will leave all readers inspired, whether they have loved ones coping with Autism or not.
