How do book giveaways work? I always thought it's like a contest - interested parties put their name in the barrel to get drawn as a lucky winner. Is this how it works?
Also, please let me know how many participants your book giveaways generated, whether this had an impact on book sales generally, what people if any were specifically invited for your genre, and what strategies and communications best maximised the participations?
It's basically a contest. Author/hosts can have contestants follow them on twitter/facebook or have them do other things to be entered. Generally they only work when you have good word of mouth. (I have one going for my blog right now and only have 3 people entered.)
If you're an author, you should look into posting your contest on Goodreads.com. I know I look at the contests on there quite often and enter them frequently. It's a good way to get your name out there.
Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely check out Goodreads. I was wanting to do a giveaway to get more exposure for my first children's picture book (Crystal's Gallant Adventures: The Mountain Pass Back to Valley Flats).
Here's the link for anyone interested in a picture book for young kids:
I've hear about Goodreads but never actally looked there, so about time for me :) I'll check out your blog and follow if my skinnyband internet allows!
Well, from a blogger point of view - I LOVE doing giveaways. I think it helps get word out about the book(s) as well as generates interest in my own site. I'm not an author, so I don't know how it goes from that end. In essense, it's a contest. Set up rules on how to enter (leave comments, use rafflecopter) and what they have to do to enter (say hello, like on facebook, follow a website, etc). Then you pick a random one to win.
As for to usefulness, I think it depends on how well you advertise it. Use facebook pages and groups. Link to giveaway linkys on big sites (twoofakindworkingonafullhouse.blogspot.com, moneysavingmom.com, frugalityisfree.com). Another thought is to find a book review blog that does a lot of your genre and ask them to host it for you. I have done probably 40-50 of these for authors of clean romance, since that is my specialty. With 500 of my own followers, half of the work is already done. Most bloggers are happy to host giveaways - they do the work, you provide the prize.
Personally, I get somewhere between 50-150 entries in a given giveaway contest. Just make sure you try to link it up at least once a day (or more) and advertise it! Good luck!
That's great advice, I really like the sound of linking to big sites and as you and Alison have pointed out I should make use of facebook and twitter as well. Looks like I have some work cut out for me! (Where's my Geni in a bottle? :)
I have never tried the contest. Might look into it and see if it is successful. I have received emails from authors at goodreads who promote contests.
