A Parable

by Anonymous

[inspired by the saga of Aaron Paul Lazar]

There was once a wise and skillful storyteller, and his stories were both well-written and entertaining. And lo, the reviews thereof were filled with praise, yet his sales were small.

And he said unto himself, "What shall I do in order to increase sales? Verily, I shall reduce the price of my stories, and have a sale." And so he did.

Then he spake unto the book bloggers, and unto the reviewers, and unto the discussion boards all across the internet, saying, "Lo, my stories are well written and greatly entertaining, and lo they have earned five-star reviews. And behold, they are now on sale at Amazon at greatly reduced price!"

And lo, his sales at Amazon did begin to multiply greatly, and he was well pleased. And he began to visit the Temple of Amazon daily, indeed hourly, to inquire as to his sales figures. And he saw that sales increased steadily and rapidly, and his royalties were great. And he rejoiced greatly, and he said unto himself, "What shall I do, since my sales are many, and my royalties are great? Shall I quit my day job, that I may devote more time to storytelling?"

But then came the day of the official sales report. And the heavens of Amazon opened, and Jeff Bezos spake unto him and said, "Thou foolish man! This day have I changed the way of reporting sales, and behold, all thy sales are taken from thee, and thine royalties shall be but dust in the scales! Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for choosing Amazon."

And great was the disappointment of the storyteller.

Note from Aaron: We're currently in negotiations with Amazon to see if we can actually get paid for all our sales. Today the sales figure is 24,000 copies of my eBook, Tremolo: cry of the loon. apl www.legardemysteries.com.
