Any thoughts on Amazon KDP's free book promotions?

I signed up for KDP when it first became available in December and saw an instant rise in sales after the free book promotions.  However, as more people signed on, Amazon became flooded with free books.  I went from being able to get five thousand downloads a day during a promotion to about two hundred.  I don't think I will be renewing my KDP membership once it expires.  Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Thank you for your input.  It's nice to know that I am not the only one who experienced this.  I think their program ultimately does more harm than good.  I will definately opt out once my term expires.
