I'm waiting to see the movie of The Lovely Bones...the book was so powerful, but it sounds as if Peter Jackson totally mucked it up...
Oh no say it isn't so! The trailer looks so promising.
The book was definitely powerful.
Also, I've learned not to expect too much when it comes to the book's movie adaptations anymore because they tend to disappoint. But with The Lovely Bones, I actually liked the movie. I think it was mainly because of the actress that played Susie Salmon herself and the one that played Mr. Harvey. Imo, they made the movie.
You probably already saw it, what did you think of it?

I so want to see this movie because it's directed by Peter Jackson but I think I'm going to have to avoid it (at least until it's out on DVD so that I can fast forward) for the same reason that I've avoided the book. A long time ago a friend gave me the book to read and I would pick it up read the back and all the rave reviews but I simply couldn't bring myself to read it. Just too horrific.
It was definitely a difficult book to read and movie to watch.
It depends for what the book is or the genre whether I'll read the book first or see the movie. If the book is a huge book like Gone With the Wind I'm likely to watch the movie. I'm not a fan of very long books. Most times a movie has made me want to read a book. I guess I am opposite from most people but I don't believe you have to read the book first. Some books I never heard of before the movie but the movie let me know about them.

Best Wishes!

I have favorite authors, who have their books made into movies, Dan Brown, James Patterson.....I always make it a point to read their books first, they are BETTER, after all, than the movie. Like The Lord of the Rings, is nothing like the movie, they took so many allowances in the movie, although I still liked it; the book was still better.
I always try to read the book first. Books trigger off one's imagination, and that's almost magic. Depending on your viewpoint, your taste and your life experience you can read yourself into a book. If I see the movie first, then, when I read the book, I can't get the director's and editors' creations, as well as the faces of the actors playing the characters, off my mind. The outlook is already framed for you, leaving out whatever meaning you could have added to the text.
Of course I read the book first. There are several reasons- 1) I can recreate the characters & scenes in my mind as I want. But movies always spoil that thrill. There is already a ready-made visual that prevents you from putting extra wings on your fairy or making the monster a bit more/less scary. 2) Reading books helps you to make your own world & live there forgetting every pain etc. of your life, while you automatically enter in the world created by the movies. I feel it the violation of a kind of 'privacy' (if you don't mind that term). 3) The children SHOULD read books before watching movies.
Make your own ideas! Form your own world! This world will surely look a better place to you if you try books first. :)
I think it just depends for me. If I haven't already read the book and the movie is coming out and it looks like something I would want to watch, I just watch the movie and read the book later. If I just read the book and the movie just came out (like The Other Boleyn Girl did for me), I learned my lesson, do not watch the movie as soon as you finish reading the book. I was so irritated with the differences that I couldn't enjoy the movie for what it was- a movie.

I don't like to compare books to movies, that's why I don't watch them so close to reading. I try to enjoy them as two separate mediums.

Hi, Wanda! =)

I'm one of those who reads the book first--on principle! In fact, if I have no plan or desire to read the book, I get someone to "spoil" the movie for me by telling me the whole story before I go and see it. =P

My cousin is trying to get me to watch The Lightning Thief with him, but as I have yet to read the book (and actually really, really want to), it seems as if he'll have to find another viewing partner.
I prefer to read the book first and then see the movie. Some adaptations work, some don't, and often my opinion on the film is influenced by whether or not I've [a] read and [b] enjoyed the book. I Capture the Castle is one of my all time favourite books, and I was horrified when the film came out, and shunned it for years. Eventually though, curiosity got the better of me and I saw it - and totally loved it! The Marinelli score is perfect, the actors absolutely right and it really captures the feel of the novel. I am still refusing to see The Time Traveller's Wife, however... Atonement looked beautiful, but didn't manage to summon up the depth of the book; Miss Pettigrew, again, looked lovely - I want that apartment! - but didn't do justice to the book.
And then there are a few films that are better than the original book. Fight Club, for example.
