Have you read a book that has became a movie, in which the Movie Director was able to preserve the originality of the book. If so which books have become equally good or better movies.

I think To Kill a Mockingbird was a fantastic movie. It's certainly not better than the book, but it's one of my favorite book-to-movies.

I can name a few that were captured very well, similarily to the books and that are in parts, better than the books were.

1. Lord of The Flies

2. The Color Purple

3. The Beach

4. To Kill a Mockingbird

5. A Tale of Two Cities

6. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

7. Moby Dick

8. Treasure Island

9. The Hobbit (animated film)

10. The Godfather

11. The Three Musketeers

Might be more but this is all I can think of off the top of my head.
Oh--definitely 2 and 10!
I haven't read the Lord of the Rings (and probably won't! We bought a copy but I didn't even want to start...) but I love the movies.

I thought the Time Traveler's Wife (book) was okay, and actually forgot a lot of the details by the time I watched the movie, so I actually liked the movie better as it was easier to understand the time travel too.
And goddog it I forgot about two big ones I thought were better than the books.

Pride and Prejudice

Gone with the Wind

The books were way too long and drawn out. Pride and Prejudice with Lawrence Oliver and Greer Garson is one of my favorite movies! I also loved Wuthering Heights. Was that a book? I'm confused on that one, LOL!

Best Wishes!

I loved Gone with the Wind, too. (But I also loved the book....)

Yes, Wuthering Heights is a novel. ;-)
Most of the time the movie cuts to much out if you read the book first. If Only It Were True is a book by Marc Levy the movie is Just Like Heaven (2005) I liked.
Three that really stand out in my mind that I read first and was so glad I did - Jurassic Park, Silence of the Lambs, and Jaws. At Powered by Books today you will find 4 February movie releases based on books. I've read two of them.
In Nov. 2009, my blog covered this topic. I actually complied a list of movies that are BETTER THAN THE BOOKS and discussed the difference between them. Hope you guys enjoy!
I was actually just thinking about this today and I can only think of two movies that I liked better then the books, and those were Chocolate, in which I loved the movie but did not like the book and Confessions of a Shopaholic, where I enjoyed the book but I liked the movie even better.
