Crazy Ads on Goodreads

Am I the only one who has noticed an influx of random ads on Goodreads that aren't book related in any way? I'll be the first one to admit that it's really irritating & frustration when I accidentally "rollover" an ad that then expands and takes up half of my computer screen.

 

On Goodreads they have ads for:

• books

• trucks

• cars

• laundry detergent

• food stuffs

• movies

• household appliances

 

The list goes on and on.

 

I remember a time, not too long ago, when there were just book and book-related ads on Goodreads that I enjoyed looking at and clicking on from time to time, but now I don't pay attention to the ads -- books or not.

 

It's sad really...they are commercializing it so much that it's ruining the "atmosphere" that Goodreads was known for. I hope that they tone it down a bit...

I was actually just about to suggest installing the Adblock add-on for anyone who doesn't use it already.  I installed earlier today to block a pornographic ad on a site that I frequent, and it seems to work really well thus far.

I'm not an active member of Goodreads but what I like about them is that Goodreads is a good (if not better) alternative to Amazon and Shelfari. So far. There's no such thing as free lunch, I guess...

I know what you mean, Bobbie.

I have been trying to decide if I notify anyone or not.

The ones that float across the screen are my least favourite.

I am hoping it is something to do with Christmas and other Holiday Celebrations.

Maybe the ads will tone down in January.

Hi Bobby, 

I agree with you regarding the random ads! There is something more deep in to it as Mary( BookHounds) was mentioning. What you are experiencing is called as 'target advertising'. You must have Googled or clicked an ad related to GMC or Telus and so on and thats why ads are targeted to you accordingly! Some of the users dont see those ads and only see book related ads or something else related to them!

More over companies do have to make money somehow! If you see Goodreads has raised investment of $2.75 million so far!
