I just wonder that we are spending quite a bit of time promoting books to boards most often visited by authors. I don't think authors buy many books.
I am curious, if it will make more sense to find boards where more readers hang out. Wish you all the very best.

If you are talking about Book Blogs Ning in particular- there are a lot of us that are bloggers and not yet authors. Bloggers can be a great resouce for reviews and spreading the word of your book through social media and our blogs.
Not everyone here may buy your book, but its more about promoting it and getting it into the hands of the people who will.
Best of luck,
Kelli

Permalink Reply by Laurie Carlson on February 3, 2012 at 8:19am I think it would surprise you as to how many books authors really do buy!
Go on over to Goodreads and check that out! Look up some authors and see what they are reading! It will shock you!! They buy and read a LOT!
They enjoy reading as much as they enjoy writing. Also, they like to learn to write from other authors as well, such as character development, etc.
Just my opinion from what I have seen.

Permalink Reply by Laurie Carlson on February 3, 2012 at 8:23am I agree with everyone except Jeremy Bates. Authors buy each others books ALL the time. At least ALL the authors I know, do.

Just my opinion.

Mixed Messages, the first novel in my Malone mystery series, is coming out in April and I know for a fact that authors make great book buyers. After all, we were readers first. I'm a member on numerous writing/marketing sites and a follower of several mystery writers' blogs. I've found so many great new books to read on those sites. I've read many of them and my "must read" list grows longer every day. What a great source of potential reads!
Permalink Reply by Meredith Ann Rutter on February 3, 2012 at 12:10pm Since I changed careers from publishing as a business to writing as a business (fiction and memoir), I read more than ever and am enjoying it more than ever. I'm getting 2-3 books in each month, and only a portion relate directly to being a writer.

I think it depends. When it comes to if we buy each other's books (meaning peer-to-peer, independently published, and not the "big names"), I would say that no, authors probably don't make the best buyers. We're a bit too skeptical of crap. The book fairs that I have participated in usually find authors swapping a copy of their books with each other at the end of the night. So there is not a lot to be had in the area of selling author to author.
Lara and I read constantly no matter if it's someone's first book or a well established writer. It helps us to be better at our craft, but I agree with you. We're not here because we think it will boost our sales. We're here to learn more about publishing, learn from our peers, and hopefully make a few friends along the way! ~Mike B.
Permalink Reply by Claire Gillian on February 5, 2012 at 1:04am Since I began writing I do read a LOT more than I ever did before. However, I get many free ARCs and beta reads from my publisher's other authors and from my close author friends. That said, I do tend to buy colleagues' books if I've gotten to "know" them on Twitter or Facebook or Absolute Write.
Permalink Reply by Michelle Pickett on February 5, 2012 at 4:47pm I'm an author of three soon to be published novels. More importantly, I'm a reader. Currently (February) I've read ten books this year. I think most authors, especially good ones, are voracious readers. And if they like your work, they'll pass the word on - there's nothing better than word of mouth advertising.
