I've been blogging for several years and only recently branched out into book blogging, so I was surprised to read some book bloggers recommending that you ask another blogger's permission before putting a link to his blog on your own.

This is certainly not standard practice in the blogging circles I'm familiar with--and before I learned to use Google Analytics and Feedjit, I had no idea that other certain bloggers had linked to me. Anyway, I understand telling a blogger that you've linked to him (because it's welcome news, isn't it?), but not asking permission.

Now I'm wondering:

a) Do you ask permission? Why or why not?

b) To those who answered YES to A: If you learned that someone linked to you without asking permission, how would you respond?

No I just link. Sometimes I will let them know with a "if you are not comfortable let me know and I will remove it" if I get the sense they don't link others.
But I have not gotten anyone so far telling me to remove it.
Bloggers blog to be seen and heard. It's usually a case of the more links the better

I just link. I've never had anyone say, "You didn't ask for permission." Blogs are public, after all. If they didn't want you to link, then they should probably just be writing in a diary at home instead of the internet.

No. I don't ask. I just link.

I have had some blog owners ask me to let them know before I link, so now I make it a practice out of consideration. Would I mind? Depends on who links, but mostly I would be happy for the exposure.

Hi,

When I link to others' sites it is mostly other authors I already know or famous writing sites that everyone links to anyway. I do not ask the authors, mainly because they are industry pals and I know they wouldn't mind. A lot of people link to my things. For example, my articles pop up everywhere on a lot of blogs, etc. I only know when I Google search. My sites are tons of places too and no one asked. I don't mind it because as long as they credited me for my articles, I am fine with it. It brings readership to my articles and helps their blogs as well. When people link to my site, that brings more exposure. I don't mind.

Maybe I shouldn't speak for others, but I believe most people do not mind. They want their sites to be visible as much as possible. I also find it flattering when someone took the time to share my articles on their sites/blog or link to anything I'm apart of. Let's face it, having others link to you is how most people's sites get noticed.

Now if I wasn't getting credit for something I wrote and it's on someone else's blog, oh yes that would make a big difference.

Best Wishes!
