UPDATE: Even some of these have chosen the select option now. Look and check out Amazon pages to know for sure. If  they have the word prime on their book, they are select. If it looks normal, they are not.

Will you help us support authors, who are supporting us?

You may not have seen it yet, it's hard to say, but you will soon. Amazon has revealed their latest weapon called KDP Select. This puts Independent authors into a lending library for Prime customers to check out for free, but they still get paid. They also get any five days they want free. The condition? Become theirs and theirs alone.

If you shop at B and N, Smashwords, or anywhere besides Amazon your book selection just grew  smaller. Authors are taking their books off of other shelves to get in. Notice an increase in free on Amazon? You will no longer find them on Barnes and Noble, Smashwords, Kobo, Diesel. Nowhere but Amazon.

Right now this many have joined.. Subtract about 5-10,000 that are trad published and were there before. The rest is independent now joining.

This smacks of wrong, and I for one hate it because I am a NOOK COLOR user. Right now I am afraid to buy a book anywhere else but Amazon because the books haven't been unpublished yet (Amazon is allowing a grace period.) Is the series you picked up going to be there tomorrow? There's a good chance it might not be. Check out this post on Kindleboards how many are choosing to leave with at least one book.

And you know, if one thing tastes good you always have another, don't you? Good things are hard to stop. If it does well, I doubt authors will be back in a mere 90 days.

Some authors are joining with all their books. Some are dipping their toe in. A good sum say will NOT do this, and even more are in the waiting category. Waiting to see what others do to compete. Waiting for some reaction.

I say we may not be gigantic bookstores, but we can still give them a reaction! By supporting the authors that continue to support other platforms. Some of these are making money in different outlets, so they don't want to leave. Others feel they would be abandoning the readers they have on other platforms.

Will you help us support them? After four days of combing Kindleboards and staying quiet, these are the authors we feel have made their voice heard the best. Ninety percent of these are against. Ten percent are borderline, but seem strongly like they have made their decision not to join.

Authors, if you chose not to join Amazon exclusively, pick up a button from our group. We want to know you are out there. Readers, if you want to help support, pick up a button from our group area.

Here is a list of authors who are not going to be joining KDP Select (the most against it, no promises because were unfortunately not psychic). There are thousands more I am sure, but starting somewhere is the first step. Find your favorite genres, and find an author. Take a couple minutes and find them in google. Join their twitter. Join their facebook. Or just email them and say you appreciate their choice.

I'm not against AMAZON authors. I even review on Amazon. I am against authors who only select Amazon exclusively. Choosing Amazon only hurts other companies, not to mention readers. If I can't find my favorite authors on B&N, I'm not going to fork over money for a kindle, I will just go back to traditional.

What I am for is authors who continue to use other outlets. Whether making money or not, competition is needed.

But with the good comes the bad.

No more book reviews from us unless it's in paperback? If so, then every author might not be as keen to join as there are so many who want a review from a digital book. Or at least want to do a giveaway.

Go paper or risk Amazon's policy.

Here is a question. I have no idea about legal stuff. Could we potentially get in trouble if we are selecting ebooks to review from an author with a select book? Or do just they? Does that mean were not supposed to worry about disclosure for books?

Or is it just a confused Amazon rep?

Spooky stuff, and I for one am not putting myself on the line for someone who doesn't want their book where I really shop anymore anyway.

True, all true. Those who don't understand the difference between KDP author and KDP select author may have trouble.I am not backlashing against you or any authors using Amazon. I still buy authors that are also on Amazon, I just don't buy them there.

I know we have to disclose books we received for a review. Good to hear we won't get in trouble if we review a title though. Especially if authors send them out right before they enter select.

To make it clear, Amazon clearly marks books with the word prime. You will see the regular cost of the book, and then 0.00 above the price if it is in KDP select.

It will appear as it always has if it's not in KDP select.

Thus far both books in the Knife of Truth YA SF series is offered at Kindle, but we also offer a Nook Book version and a google ebook version. Kindle sales are higher since we sold one there, as opposed to 0 elsewhere. We've done better selling to people we meet in parking lots who are waiting for somebody and need a great read.

I'm frustrated about this for two reasons: our family just purchased two Nooks, days before this announcement, and also because my book After the Snow Falls www.afterthesnowfalls.com has just been published by Trestle Press this week. Trestle Press's authors have experienced tremendous success on Amazon, but they have decided NOT to take Kindle up on this, for the very reasons you cite: loyalty to readers.

I agree that it smacks of wrong. Amazon can do whatever it wants, but exclusivity doesn't serve readers.

And I am very proud of Trestle Press for taking that stand, when I'm sure the pressure is to go the other way.

I just don't know, I flat out don't know what to do.  I want to sell books.  I want people to read what I write.  I feel loyal to Smashwords because that was one of the first places that I epublished.  I hate the idea of exclusivity, but I can see that I might be better off to go with Amazon.  I think that if I were just now completing "Sarah's Spaceship Adventure," or "The Colors of Passion and Love," I would list them with Amazon alone, but the books are already at Smashwords and Bookiejar and I hate, hate, hate, the idea of removing them.  I don't know what to do.

I do know this.  There is nothing happening in the forums at Barnes and Noble, and the recent changes they have made to the Nook software are damaging their chances.  If they are going to compete in the book market, they had better hire someone than understands the rapid changes that are happening to the technology and the influence of social media, otherwise they are toast..

I sell on Amazon but will not join KDP Select. Even if my sales are geometrically higher on Amazon than any other site.
