Do you prefer URBAN settings or RURAL settings?

I definitely enjoy reading books set in the city rather than the country or suburbia. More action, more diversity, and less gossip amongst the characters.

I'm happy with either, so long as the author keeps the setting fresh and interesting. I don't like books that stereotype either setting.

I think it depends upon author's background. I am comfortable with both.

I don't think it matters. You can write rural, and have it be as detailed as an urban setting, or use an urban setting with a very limited viewpoint. It's all in how you write it.

i think the story dictates the setting.... but i actually like small town settings... if they have charm and atmosphere

I think the setting is a big part of the narrative; in a lot of good science fiction, the setting IS a large part of the story, so it's an interesting question :D

I think the a compelling country setting can be harder to write IMO; a city has so many sights, sounds and smells to create character.

I like both, though to tell the truth, I'm more inclined to read books set in the city. Maybe that's because I'm a city girl myself. And, of course, I like stories set in space, whether "rural" or a city.

I prefer rural, but I think it's because I identify more with characters from rural areas. :)

I from a rural area myself, and I pretty sure that's what influences my decision. But then again, I've read some really good books with urban settings. :)

Hi Matt, a very interesting question. My Julius Thompson thrillogy is set in both. A Brownstone in Brooklyn is set in New York City, Philly Style and Philly Profile in Philadelphia and Ghost of Atlanta in Atlanta and the surrounding small  towns. Setting is a character and you choose it very carefully, because it will definitely impact your book. Right now, I choose Urban/rural depending on the book. Julius Thompson. www.purplephantoms.com
