I definitely enjoy reading books set in the city rather than the country or suburbia. More action, more diversity, and less gossip amongst the characters.

I can find merits in both, honestly. It really depends on what I am looking for at the time. I will read most things at one point or another, though, honestly,.
Permalink Reply by Kathryn on April 12, 2012 at 8:29am I'm happy with either, so long as the author keeps the setting fresh and interesting. I don't like books that stereotype either setting.

There's a million stories in the city, and when you get to the inner city, there's a million more!

How about deep space? Does that count as a rural setting?

Jesse,
Certainly "Beyond" rural!

I think the setting is a big part of the narrative; in a lot of good science fiction, the setting IS a large part of the story, so it's an interesting question :D
I think the a compelling country setting can be harder to write IMO; a city has so many sights, sounds and smells to create character.

I like both, though to tell the truth, I'm more inclined to read books set in the city. Maybe that's because I'm a city girl myself. And, of course, I like stories set in space, whether "rural" or a city.

I prefer rural, but I think it's because I identify more with characters from rural areas. :)
I from a rural area myself, and I pretty sure that's what influences my decision. But then again, I've read some really good books with urban settings. :)

Hi Matt, a very interesting question. My Julius Thompson thrillogy is set in both. A Brownstone in Brooklyn is set in New York City, Philly Style and Philly Profile in Philadelphia and Ghost of Atlanta in Atlanta and the surrounding small towns. Setting is a character and you choose it very carefully, because it will definitely impact your book. Right now, I choose Urban/rural depending on the book. Julius Thompson. www.purplephantoms.com
