Editing question

I am working on self-publishing a book through Createspace.  I can't afford their editing costs but I don't know how well I can edit my own book.  Is there some people who would be willing to help edit this book of mine?  

I will be asking around at church soon too.

Asking friends and family to read through your novel is a great way to catch flow problems or repetative phrases, but I would invest in a professional editor. As a reader of Published and Self Published novels, the biggest difference I usually see between the 2 is the editing.

There are other sites you can check out that are reasonably priced and you can get editing feedback if you specify that's what you would like. Authorsden and Fanstory. I would offer, but with work, writing and the farm, I haven't the time. I'm lucky enough to have a very talented daughter that edits for me... Though I'm going professional next time.

Not to change your position, but I self-edited by reading my work through 11 times.  Reading aloud is a very good way to reveal awkward sentence structure, or sentences too short and choppy, etc.  I did have two people read it also, and I deleted some 20,000 words early on, and did a good bit of re-creating prior to doing 9 more read-throughs.

 

Typos and poor grammar are killers as others have said on this subject.  I have even seen typos in top-sellers by big name authors.  They are rare, but they can be there.

 

If I was going to hire someone now, I would repeat that process that I did and then give it to an editor.

Good point, Gerry.

 

One of the other things- before handing it off to editors or beta readers- is to leave it alone for a bit so that your head isn't in the story, say some weeks, print it off, and then go through it that way. You'd be amazed at what you catch on the printed page with distance and time that you didn't see going through it earlier.
