Eye-Catching Blog Design: What Works and What Doesn't?

So you go to a new blog, and in less than 10 seconds, you've probably decided whether to stay and read or not. What makes you stay? What makes you go? Keep in mind, you haven't had time to read any content -- maybe titles.

I don't mind a little bit of colour or images, but if the background makes the text difficult to read, I probably won't read it. Generally I like blogs that are easy to read and where the side bars are not too distracting (meaning: there isn't any movement or sound). If it's late and I'm tired or I'm not in a well lit room I don't like white or too bright backgrounds either. I prefer dark or light grey / cream.
