Eye-Catching Blog Design: What Works and What Doesn't?

So you go to a new blog, and in less than 10 seconds, you've probably decided whether to stay and read or not. What makes you stay? What makes you go? Keep in mind, you haven't had time to read any content -- maybe titles.

If the banner or a lot of images on the sidebars that are really poor quality generally turn me away in an instant. Just text is preference over poor quality images.

I understand what you mean! Actually, I just don't like reading blogs with really dark backgrounds and light text because that just hurts the eyes.

I agree with you Vivian. White text on black especially, use to be really popular and so hard on the eyes.

Visited your blog, like the layout, easy on the eyes and brain. Nice reviews. I listened

to The Help and it was a great book, sad, but good.

Thanks for reading!

I like creative blogs, but not overly congested...only because I get sensory overload with too much bling, as it were.   Simplicity is probably best, but again, some measure of creativity is compelling, adding a greater dimension to the blogger and the blog.

What draws me to a blog would definitely be content, clean lines work, but not too plain. I don't care for  flashy, blinking pics, etc. and I don't really like music/sounds in the background.

If anyone has time, could they look over my site and tell me your likes/dislikes or improvements that I should make as far as:

my overall layout design, background color, and or/ text color.

I'm fairly new to the blogging world (almost 3 months)

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated, thank you for your time and your input.

Hi there :) If anything, the white text on black background is hard on the eyes and the text seems a bit big. I personally find it hard to read after a while. Otherwise I like your blog.

Thanks for the input! I'm peeking over at your blog now! It looks good and I'm a new follower!

Hi there :) Thanks for following I'm also following you back. It's so much easier to read now that the text is a light grey :) great blog by the way.

Thanks, for the advice! It does look better, already

I don't mind a little bit of colour or images, but if the background makes the text difficult to read, I probably won't read it. Generally I like blogs that are easy to read and where the side bars are not too distracting (meaning: there isn't any movement or sound). If it's late and I'm tired or I'm not in a well lit room I don't like white or too bright backgrounds either. I prefer dark or light grey / cream.

I'd love to hear opinions and / or suggestions: http://hellensreadingcorner.blogspot.com/
