Last year I veered away from writing contemporary romance to try a short Regency. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing and research and it made me wonder what kind of romance do readers most enjoy?
Today I blogged about this and put a poll with the post. The answers are interesting already, showing that most people enjoy paranormal/fantasy and a 'spicy' rating. I'd be interested to see what you think www.leighdanseyromanceauthor.blogspot.com Any other thoughts?

Permalink Reply by Leigh D'Ansey on April 30, 2011 at 3:29am Hi RYCJ. I love chic lit too. One of my favourites is Marian Keyes. As well as other things, I'm working on a more realistic WIP at the moment. A long project though.
Thanks for the response :)

I prefer the cleaner romances. Any genre, though I must say I lean towards the historical ones. Regency and medieval are great. But I read all kinds of romance.
By the way, if your books are on the cleaner side, I'd be happy to do some reviews. See my page for my review policy and request page. =D

I'll sure check out your website. My romances are rated 'spicy' by the publishers (The Wild Rose Press).

Historical romance every time!!
For me its the escapism of the past that adds to the romance. Someone suggested I try paranormal, for the escapist element, but no - it just didnt do it for me...so back to beloved HR>

Paranormal all the way! :-D But I occasionally find a contemp or historical that interests me. If it is an author I love, I'll try any subgenre they write. For the heat level, I chose explicit though I wasn't sure how you are defining spicy vs. explicit. Actually anything from spicy to erotic is okay for me as long as there is a good romance. I do feel there is a significant difference between erotic romance and erotica so I tend not to use the term erotica to describe romance. It drives me crazy when a book site dumps everything under the erotica label.

Wow there are so many sub genres under "Romance" isn't there! Here are my top 5.
1. My favourite are Historical (just even sub genres under historical Regency, Medieval etc) Romances.
2. I love good erotica (yes many sub genres menage, M/M )
3. Western Romances (mmm cowboy love!)
4. Contemps
5. Mystery/Suspense/Action Romances
I do read Paranormal but I tend to get sick of those pretty fast. I am dedicated to a few authors in Paranormal (JR Ward, Jeaniene Frost)
But basically a book has Romance in it, and there is a HEA, I will read it and review it.

Permalink Reply by Adharshila Chatterjee on May 2, 2011 at 3:00pm I'm in the paranormal category for the most part. I don't read pure romance, it needs to either have some sort of supernatural, paranormal, fantasy, or major suspense element to it. For example,I love Nora Roberts' trilogies like The Key trilogy, the Blood Brothers, etc. But I can't read her straight-up romance novels at all.
I also like fun chick lit, my favorite was "Goodnight, Nobody" by Jennifer Weiner.
