When declining a review pitch from a PR or author, do you give a reason for declining?

It's also nice when the author/publisher requesting the book demonstrates that they've read said review policy or are familiar with one's blog.  For example, if I get a review request for a romance novel despite stating in my review policy that I don't review that genre, I get a bit frustrated.

Oh yes, I agree! Since I'm using Wordpress, I can view page hits through my site stats. That way, I know when my review policy page has been viewed and if I receive an email from an author on that particular day, I know if he/she has read my review policy. This has happen many times.

I give a polite reason to decline. I also thank them for the opportunity, normally it is out of my genre so it is an easy decline. If it is another reason like I read the sample and it is poorly written, I simple say my review list is excessive atm.

Erotica mostly. I review thrillers (LOVE them), but not erotic thrillers.

I have a standard response if I choose to decline, it's simple but it works.

Dear {Author/Publisher Name}
Thank you for approaching me regarding a review for your book, {Book Title}. Unfortunately I must decline the opportunity at this time. I do appreciate your consideration and wish you the best of luck with your work.

Regards,

Thanks, Shelly, for the example response! :)
