Happy Thanksgiving, what book are you most thankful for?

Greetings,

I did not see any Thanksgiving posts so I thought I would start my own. It is a day late I know but I was too busy eating yesterday to post anything. It's hard to say what book I am most thankful for but it might be Tolkien’s Lord of Rings trilogy. I was very young when I first read it and it was the book that introduced me to how amazing fiction can be. I was very swept up into the story after his terribly slow start. It opened up the world of books to me.

David I'd have to say my own books! I am very thankful to god for opening the doors for me by giving me will, drive, determination and talent to become published and to live my dream. I intend to keep doing so for as long as I live!

Best Wishes!

I have to say the Bible for obvious reasons. From a more literary aspect, I would agree with you on Lord of the Rings. Of course you have to add the Hobbit along with the other three. That's just my 2 cents. Tolkien was the man. I could just about smell the smoke and orcs.

Happy Reading!

I would say One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.
Well, because it teaches so much about humanity.....The Book Thief.
David, please tell me how to read Lord Of The Rings. It's been sitting in my home library for years. I bought it since it's a classic. Also Chronicles Of Narnia. Hope to read it before I die. The question is when to begin reading it. These genre boggles my mind.Cheers, Idzan
I'm not David, and not sure what you're asking. I read The Hobbit first, then read Fellowship of the Rings, The Two Towers, and finally Return of the King. The Hobbit kinda fills in some of the detail about how the Hobbits got the ring to begin with.
Lord of the Rings, I must admit, is a tough start. The book does not pick up till you get a few chapters in but it is worth the trouble. The battle at helms deep is some of the best action I have every read. Chronicles of Narnia is a much easier read. I think you should forget all the hype about Lord of the Rings and just read it for the good literature it is. Make a plan and stick to it. That is the only way I have finished some of the books I needed to read. Good luck.

LOTR is pretty intense with imagery and that can grate on those that wants immediate satisfaction. I have found with good sci-fi and fantasy that once you commit to the ground work, it really pays off.

Happy Reading!

A luck would have it, I have already answered this question at some length: http://www.speakwithoutinterruption.com/site/2009/11/thanksgiving-t...

I would also add George Polley's beautiful e-book 'The Old Man & The Monkey': http://www.speakwithoutinterruption.com/site/2009/11/review-of-the-...
I am most thankful for The Time Traveler's Wife. It was one of the most amazing books I've read so far...and I loved it!
My favourite book is The Teachings of Billionaire Yen Tzu - the stories are thought provoking and his teachings are full of wisdom for the world today.
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant and Ahab's Wife by Sena Jeter Naslund
