I'm a huge fan of Roman History and am rapidly picking up more books about the Crusades and Viking Conquests than I'm ever likely to find the time for. Glutton for punishment that I am, I'd like to know what anyone else would recommned by way of Historical Fiction.
Apart from that guy who wrote Tyrant, he's bloody awful.

Hi there,
I have recently read The Kingmaking by Helen Hollick. I've posted my review here and I can honestly say that it is one good piece of historical fiction. It's coming out in the first week of March but you can pre-order it from Amazon.
It really is something that I feel you'd like.
I tried to read Hollicks King Arthur book and found it to be a chore. Has her writing improved any?
I read my first Steven Saylor book, Roman Blood, not too long ago and he is immediately my favourite historical author. The pace, the knowledge behind the fiction and the development and description of characters was second to none.

Also read Eagle in The Sand by Scarrow. Definetely more a Schwarzenegger book but a good read when you've just finished some 1000 page epic.

Tried Robyn Youngs first Crusade book and just did not grab me at all.
Marguerite Yourcenar's "Memoirs of Hadrian" and "The Abyss", Clive Ashman's "Mosaic" (4th century Roman Britain), Julian Rathbone's "The Last King of England", Robert Graves' "I, Claudius".

If you like ancient Rome novels, you might like The Bow of Heaven:
