Hot Dogs & Hamburgers is one of the most uplifting books I have read in years! This is the true story of how Rob Shindler, a lawyer dad becomes a successful reading tutor. Faced with the daunting prospect of how to help his reading disabled son, he is led to become an adult literacy tutor. His experiences in teaching 8 inner city Chicago adults from very different backgrounds are truly inspirational. What is even more astounding is how his two older children play a major part in changing all their lives. The book outlines in a very practical way many useful strategies to help both children and adults succeed in learning to read. I have a 34 year teaching background in working with disabled readers and various professional degrees so I know what techniques are tried and true. This book is not only a motivation for becoming a tutor but a true guide to some exceptional techniques. I plan to have this book adopted as a reading group choice in both of my reading groups this year. Thank you Rob and family.
