I have bought my at book stores and their online websites but within the past year I have started borrowing books and lending them. I also found a book store(Gottwal's Books, Warner Robins, Georgia) in my area that buys books from you and in return you can buy used books at a discounted rate. Usually if I have friends that want to read the books I lend them out before I sell them back to the same book store. I feel that this is a more "Eco- friendly" way of satsifying my book addiction!
I ususally go to Borders, though I wish we had a local book store to support. Lately, I've also been receiving review copies of books. If you'd like review copies you can start by joining the groups "This Book For Free" or "Early Birds ARC Review" here on book blogs
.
I either get them online or at a bookstore. Very rarely do I borrow them. I do this only because if I really enjoy a book, I'd like it to stay on my bookshelf. LOL I also swap books that I don't want either on Bookmooch or Paperback Swap.
I get most of my books from www.KIMBooks.org . They are a nonprofit bookstore. Their inventory is very similar to Amazon's only everything is at cost, including shipping. There deals are great!
I buy books at local brick and mortar bookstores. I buy from retailers of new books, and also from retailers of used books. I like to support local independent businesses and entrepreneurs. If I purchase business books online, I like to support idependents like 800-CEO-READ. I like to buy directly from book publishers, and directly from authors, as well.
Used book sales and yard sales are also wonderful sources for buying books.
The vast majority of the books I read and review are library books. I rarely buy a book that I have not yet read. If I do buy books, it is usually through a used book sale (often at a library).
I try to buy through local stores but lots of books are published first in the UK or US and I am impatient so do a fair amount of book shopping online too. Book Depository is my favourite site because it does free shipping to Australia.
I've virtually given up borrowing from my local library but do borrow from friends a fair bit and for the last few months have been giving and getting a lot of books through bookmooch.
Lately I have been going to the local Library rather than buying my books. When I here about a great author or book if it's not available in the New book section I have been asking the Library to put them on hold for me.
Most hardback books are too expensive for me to buy, the average new hardback is almost 30$.
Paperbacks are a little less expensive some where between 8 to 15$ but still a little too much so the Library or
Used bookstore (paperbacks only) are about my only options.
I buy lots of Egyptology books, but as I live in Spain, and this country has no tradition in Egyptology, I have to buy them in the UK or the States, so I normally do it online. I also buy lots of them when I go to England, but I always get very stressed when I see my suitcase full of books going to the plane. I always think that they are going to lose it!
