How Do You Find Your Next Book?

If you are a vociferous reader, you probably read some books that you don't choose to blog about. How do you cull the wheat from the chaff when it comes to blogging? And, more to the point, how do you maintain your momentum when you've read a really great book?

 

I've just discovered a helpful referral site - The Book Seer - that helps you use the title/author of a favorite book to find similar books. I've written a review of the site on my own blog, Too Many Books, Too Little Time.

 

Where do you get referrals that work for you?

So far, I don't (always). Keeping momentum is a really big problem.

I'm a slower reader than may here (I can do about two books a week, though usually slightly less than that -- we'll say five or six a month). I blog everything, whether I liked it or not.

There are some books that I read that I don't blog about but they are mostly special interest books that I don't really read from cover to cover, such as knitting, exercise, cookbooks. Anything that I do read cover to cover I will blog about, since it doesn't take that long to write a review after I have finished the book (I usually wait until the next day to write it.)

As for referrals for what to read, I get them from everywhere. I'm constantly checking out other book blogs, my bookstore website, the book section of the paper on Sunday, the library. I'm definitely going to have to check out The Book Seer, it may be come the newest of one of my many tools!

I have such a wide interest in book types that I don't find it that difficult to move on after reading a really great book. There is just so much I want to read, that as soon as I finish one book, my bookmark is in the next one to read!

You might be surprised how much people are interested in reviews of those kinds of items. I knit, and I always want to know what others think of the book/magazine/pattern before I buy or just CO :)

That's true Becki. It's not so much that I think people won't be interested, it's because I tend to flip through the books (I'm a beginner knitter) and since I haven't really read the book, I don't feel like I should be reviewing it. I think if I come across one that I actually pay attention to the majority of the book, then I would probably review it.

I really don't know. Honestly. I don't keep much of a TBR list. It's a bit of a mystery to me. There are a few reviewers/blogs that I trust, so if they give a rave, I will take a look. Otherwise, my desultory reading/browsing/surfing generates the lion's share of what actually ends up in my hands.

I choose what books to read mostly from recommendations other bloggers and friends and family. If a blogger raves about a book I will look into it and see if its the sort of thing I like before adding it to my TBR list.

In terms of reviews I put all my books on my blog apart from sewing and baby books or books which I gave up on.

Jessica, I checked out your blog - it's really great! I'm inspired by your "10 Worst" list - I'm going to give that some thought. I've come across some real turkeys over the years!

I agree that the blogging community is a wonderful place for referrals, and the reviews are usually thoughtful and informative.

I just started blogging and am posting on everything I read.

As for how I find books, I peruse Publisher's Weekly and Locus (for my SF titles). I also volunteer in a library and seldom go home with less than 3 books that I have set aside while shelving.

I read so much that I just keep on going and my momentum seldom slow, except at the end of semesters (right now!) when I have to finish work in my classes. I am a rabid reader and finish on average a book a day while school is in session and maybe 2 a day during breaks. I just finished a 24 hour read-a-thon and got six books done.

I am lucky enough to get some of my recommendations from publicists, publishers, authors and friends. I also utilize Goodreads, and find books the old fashioned way, by magazines and newspaper reviews.

This is why I decided to go to the Book Blogger Convention, because I spend way too much time look for books to read. I review around 15 books a month, so I don't have time to spend all that time looking for them.
