I just saw the discussion about how fast you read books after receiving one to review. But my question is: how do you get those books in the first place? Do you approach publishers or have they found you?
If you go into some of the different groups here, you can get a chance to do giveaways and reviews on books that publishers have available. Also you can contact Bostick Communications, and Shelf Awareness. I'm not sure of many other ways, I'm pretty new to the blogging scene, and am just learning myself.
I get them as they come out at my library. Sometimes, I get sent reviewers copies sent to me, but I don't actively seek them out.
I also select books from a mix of online sites like Powells Review A Day, The American Booksellers Association Indienext List, Locus Magazine online and Romantic Times online and various blogs and in print I check Library Journal, Booklist, Kirkus Reviews, The New York Times Book Review, and Publishers Weekly. I also will occassionally check The New York Review of Books in print. I like going to the Strand Bookstore in Manhattan which also has an online presence.
iBookDB is working with publishers to get review books for our official reviewers. If you do review books and would like to get review copies, please email contact@ibookdb.net to become an official reviewer for us.
I get mine through Bostick Communications, Shelf Awareness, Goodreads, Librarything, I email authors and publishers directly, Barnes and Nobles First Look and through here!
One of the things that helped me was J. Kaye at J. Kaye's Book Blog. She has a list of people (called the Book Blogger Referral List) where when she gets offers from publishers and authors for review books, she sends them the list of people, and then if your name is on the list, you get the offer.
I also get books from Hachette, Bostick Communications, Penguin/FSBMedia, and sometimes the author has contacted me directly. Goodreads is also a good place. And if you put reviews up on Amazon, after a while if they like what you've written, you can get an invitation to Amazon Vine, which is a like a first look program where you can get ARCs.
