I know, I know. I am a book reader. A lover of all things fiction and hardcover and papery. But I am tempted and seduced by these fancy-shmancy electronic reading devices! Before the rotton food starts flying in my general direction, let me explain...

I'm thinking of purchasing either a Kindle or a Sony E-Reader and I'd like to know if anyone else has one, which they prefer, how well they work, and anything else you may have heard. I said I'm just THINKING, stop with the tomatos and corn already!!! I am not betraying my bookcase, or the number of books I still wish to buy, I'm just thinking that for those books that are not as integral to my collection, I could download them instead of actually buying them, thus preserving the small amount of space left on my bookcases. Ugh, it's so hard to think of any book that I would rather download than have to own!!!

Don't judge me. I haven't purchased yet. And you know you want one.

I read on the internet that Amazon is making the knidle available at public libraries so people can see it. I am uncertain how many or which libraries.
There is a new devise called the notebook by barnes and noble
I'm actually trying to as much research as possible b/c I really really want to get an e-reader. I know that I'm not investing in the Nook especially b/c they keep pushing their shipping dates back...and now with the whole law suit with the Alex reader...I just want to avoid the whole situation.

Kindle II has just recently started being shipped to Canada so now that's an available option for me...I just hate the limited formats on it...although everything else about it looks and sounds great..I love the sleekness and compactness of the device. The other device that caught my eye was the Astak EZ Reader....it's not the prettiest looking thing but it does a pretty darn good job of handling .PDF and Adobe Digital Edition files...which is kinda really important to me. All my ebooks are in .PDF format and I'm so not looking forward to converting 1000+ ebooks to a compatible format to transfer over to my e-reader device.

Kindle II is swaying heavily in to the YES section though...Anyone else have any others to throw into the ring?
My hubby offered me one of these... he thoughtI'd like it BUT he had an alterer motive too... he's wants to get rid of the 4 books shelfs that I have over stacked each shelf til it spills out onto the floor.
After spending most of my day in front of a computer, I like being able to just curl up with the feel of paper between my fingers and read a book!

I'm not ready for the switch! (If I won one or was gifted one, I guess I'd use it... but I am not running to my local Best Buy just yet!)

I like looking at all the beautiful covers and stepping over the books that fall from my over stuffed bookshelves!
oh no...I'm keeping my books...I'm actually always adding to my print book collection too...but I want a more comfortable method to read my ebooks. It gets tiring reading on my macbook for hours on end...I want to be able to curl up and read...you can't really do that with a laptop.

Dear Alayne:
Here is a followup to the discussion. You might also read this article in today's New York Tmes on people eschewing Kindle and Nook for reading applications that work on their Iphones and other PDAs: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/18/technology/18reader.html

I have a Kindle and I LOVE it. I can't comment on the E-reader or the other similar devices as I have never seen them, but I don't think you could go wrong with the Kindle. My only regret is that I bought mine in the summer of 2008 and they released the newer model in 2009. The only thing I wish my older Kindle had is the audio-option, which the new one has. I hate having to put down a good book to cook dinner, etc. and if I could just switch it to "audio" the device itself would read to me while I cook (or clean, etc) so I don't miss out on anything. Then, I can pick it back up to continue reading when I'm finished.

I didn't realize how much I would use my Kindle until I got it. I am a self-described "book addict" and never thought it would replace my "real" books but (I'm slightly ashamed to admit) it has. It is so easy to grab and toss in my purse, the diaper bag, the car, etc. that I ALWAYS have it with me. I never have to worry about bending pages or tearing the dust jacket, as with a "real" book. I never have to worry about it weighing down my already full purse, as it weighs about the same as a paperback book.

My husband is constantly amazed at how much it can HOLD. As I mentioned, I have the older version and have been using it nearly daily for 1.5 years and it's nowhere NEAR capacity. In fact, we went on vacation this summer, which involved a LONG flight. My husband, who has the attention span of a Cocker Spaniel, was fretting over what to fill his carry-on bag with to keep him entertained. As we pulled out of the drive, he asked where my carry-on bag was. I replied "what carry-on?" My Kindle is all I needed and it easily fits in my purse.
On reading the discussion here I ended up getting the kindle and I have to say I am very pleased with it. I think it works well if your a parent which I am and you don't want kids into your things the kindle is so thin and easy to put up high. And it's really light weight too. Plus you get the whole sample a book prior to purchasing it
