I love my blogger blog but I just bought my domain name and I am scared to make the switch. Blogger has always done just what I need it to do and I have tried WP previously but I can't afford even the small amount it will cost to self host.
What can I expect?
Is there a lag time in switching ?
Has anyone done this?
Is it hard to redirect feedburner?
The guys at GoDaddy are so sweet and will hold my hand to make the switch but I have so many promotions going on right now, I don't want to mess up my links. How horrible will it be to switch my stuff.
I haven't done my own domain, but I did change the name of my blog. I had to manually change it on Feedburner because they were directing people to my old blog name which didn't exist.
That is good to know !
Hi Mary. I moved my blog from WordPress to Weebly (hosted at Web.com) and it was a huge undertaking. I don't regret doing it and I am extremely happy with my site now but it was a challenge.
You have to re-build and re-design everything. Build new pages, new layout, new color scheme, create new links, new format, and either import or copy/paste all of your text. It took me three months to convert and another three to perfect it to where I wanted.
Feedburner is easy to redirect but I actually switched to MailChimp RSS-to-EMail campaigns. It looks prettier and I found it easier to use. It's free unless you have 1,000's of followers.
Once I did the final conversion my site was only down for about 12 hours. I put up a note to everyone and left it up for two days before the conversion so regular readers would understand. It didn't hurt my traffic.
Why not simply redirect your new domain name to point to your Blogger page (you can mask the URL if you wish).
I thought about redirecting the domain name but I wanted a new layout and to re-organize the site. I wasn't happy with the WordPress look any longer so that didn't work for me. It is a great idea though if she's already happy with the look of her site.
I used GoDaddy to buy my domain name and you don't have to give up your blogger site! I didn't change anything at all. I just forward all traffic from my new domain name directly to my blogger blog and it has been seamless. All you have to do is go to the DNS manager portion, select edit, go down to the section where you see the www, highlight the next box where the @ symbol and insert your new domain name & then hit update. It should then ask you if you want to forward this new address to an existing and that is where you will enter you html that's for your blogger blog. Give GoDaddy a call they have the best customer service and they will hold you hand step by step, just tell them you want to forward traffic without changing anything to your existing blog. Good luck!
