My wonderful husband has given me the choice of a Nook or Kindle for Christmas. I have looked at both and they seem to have their pros and cons. I was wondering if anyone here with experience with either one would mind sharing.

Is either one better for NetGalley? Does either one not work for NetGalley?

I am sure I will be happy with whichever I ultimately choose but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask for opinions.

Thanks in advance.

Merry Christmas!

Hi Patty,

I did a blog post on this earlier this month, as I was having the same dilemma that you were. Here is the link - http://booksandneedlepoint.blogspot.com/2010/12/to-kindle-or-not-to... if you would like to go read some of the comments that were left.  It helped me to decide to go with the Nook - as I want to be able to download books from our public library.  Hope it helps!

Kristi,

Thanks. That was helpful.

I appreciate your response.

Patty

I have had a Kindle for alomst 2 years, and I just got a Nook (Nook Classic, not the Nook Color) for Christmas. The biggest differences are as follows:

1. You can download library books to the Nook, not the Kindle.

2. On the Nook (Classic) you can see book covers in color

3. On the Nook you can get free stuff if you take your Nook to a Barnes and Noble store (they have a freebie Smoothie right now.

The rest is all pretty similar, i.e.; size, page turning speed, groupinng of books, etc, but the biggest thing I have noticed is the ease of the website. Amazon is truly a breeze, everything is so simplistic and user friendly. It took be 1/2 hour to figure out how to use a gift card at BN and then u have to re-enter the card number each time to see your balance. With Amazon you just apply the amount and you can check it easily when you log in to your account.

So basically it will narrow down to personal choice, so good luck! Do you research, that's what I did when I first got my Kindle, and was extremely happy with it. Before I got my Nook, I did the same research to figure out the differences and decided to get it primarily for the library book ability.

Liz,

Thanks so much for your reply. It's good to hear from someone who has both. I hope you had a great holiday.

LOVE my Kindle!  But my sister LOVES her Nook!  I really don't care about the color and stuff so I am 100% happy with my Kindle and wholeheartedly recommend it!

It does seem to be an even playing field. I do thank you for answering.

I've gone an ordered a Nook so we'll see what happens.

I also have a Nook and love it as well!  The other feature they have (that Kindle doesn't yet) is the ability to lend some of the books you purchase to other Nook owners.  I think they are pretty close otherwise but library books was also a selling point for me.  Hope you love it!

I have a nook and I love it.

Technically both the nook (NOT nookColor) and the Kindle are the same, using eInk and eScreen technologies.

As an IT guy I find that the ability to add memory to the nook via an SD card is especially enticing and the fact that I am not bound to one company.  Kindle does not support ePub files which are fast becoming industry standard.

Basically if you buy a Kindle your are stuck buying eBooks from Amazon, with a nook you can buy eBooks from all sort of places including borrowing them from your local library if available.

Also I understand that the Kindle doesn't show page numbers. As an avid reader and a blogger that is a biggie for me.

Thanks. I didn't know about the memory - very cool. I can't wait for it to arrive now!

I want to get the Nook. But that is because they have this thing where if you go into Barnes N Noble you can read free books for an hour. It is in beta though so I don't know if it is permanent and I live really close to a Barnes and Noble. Finally, I just really dislike Amazon.

It's not in beta, it has been working since I got my nook (6 months).  Also you get coupons on your nook for free coffee, chocolates etc.

Yeah. I saw that the day after I posted that. What I thought said Beta actually said In Store. I was lazy and just decided not to fix it. I was hoping someone would fix it for me.

I also recently bought the Nook. The original one and I like it. Although I am knitting myself a cover for it because the ones at the store were not cheap. I saw one for almost the same amount as the actual Nook.
