I can't remember where I got this figure (the forum at ProBlogger?) that says only one out of every 100 readers you have will also be a commenter. I figure it's more of a hyperbole than a decent estimate. Or if it is any way accurate, then that's for blogs with a lot of traffic and a great number of lurkers. Then again, the 100 "readers" could include people who stumble upon one post, read it and like it, but then never come back.

What do you think? And is there any way to calculate general readers vs. commenter statistics?

I am always surprised to note how many people have passed through my blog without commenting. I like to receive comments, but I feel satisfied knowing that someone is reading what I have to say.
emperatrix, i def agree with you! you summed it up great : )
Based upon my stats, that's a pretty accurate number! And for whatever reason, teachers (my main readers) seem to fel more comfortable emailing me rather than leaving a comment. I know that some are intimidated by Blogger's format for posting; others want to ask questions somewhat unrelated to the most recent post.

I wonder (and please tell if you know!): do comments have a bearing upon Google rankings?
While I am not a blogger, I am working on building an interest in a book by Rosanne Lortz. It has been selling ok on Amazon for as little marketing I have done so far. I wonder how many of the readers who bought the book might also post a review. I have to wait for the right person to get the book and also write about it. I think starting some book signings might help. We can talk with readers and let them know how much we like their feedback. For me reader comments help out on the dollars and cents part of this adventure.
