Do you think it's a good idea to always let an author know you are including their book on your blog? I recently did this and the author posted a link to my book blog on her website. It definetly increased my page views. I'm referring to best selling authors.

Best selling authors, mid-list authors, small press authors -- I'd tell them all. There's no reason not to, and it would absolutely up the traffic to your site. Besides, what a great feeling to have written something and see someone's opinion about it. Even if you didn't love the work, you're acknowledging it.

Yes - I just reviewed a book via NetGalley http://lgib-bookreview.blogspot.com/2012/08/how-to-mend-broken-hear... and got a comment back from the author, who posted the above link on her Facebook page. Strictly speaking I didn't tell her directly, but the her publishers were aware of my review.

I also review for a lot of independent authors and they always appreciate me telling them that I've reviewed their book. Besides promoting your own blog, it's promoting the author - good all round I'd say.

Yeah, absolutely, and I think that any good reviewer looks not just for a simplistic thumbs up or down sort of response, but a discussion of the work within a larger context of literature. That kind of discussion -- which it sounds like you're doing -- is very good for the writer even if you didn't like his or her work in the end.

Surely the whole idea of you blogging is to get people to read what you write about. So advertising is the key. I believe an author is always going to promote your blog if you are featuring her, she's after as much exposure as she can get and this is one way to get it without being too in-your-face about promoting. If you were featuring me on your blog I would sure tell as many people via social media as I could. Maybe best selling authors don't need such exposure but I feel it would be rude for them not to share your blog with others. I wouldnt be blogging about them again, no matter how big they were.

Absolutely! If you're too big to even acknowledge me after I've written about you, than you don't really need me.

I think it's a great idea to let authors know when you are reviewing their novel. They love  the feedback and it could led to them asking you to review more of their work. I had this happen to me when I told an author about my review. When her second book in the series came out she emailed me about it! :)
