Someone approached me about renting space on my blog (in the sidebar) for the purpose of advertising. Anyone have any experience with this? If so what about a fee structure? And most of all, is it a good idea?

It's not a bad idea, especially if you're being approached by people who want to do it. You can still control what you'll allow. If it doesn't cost you anything, why not?

There are a number of ad management tools that you can use to automate it, the easiest for someone who doesn't want to spend a lot of time on it is probably adpeeps, who'll host an ad server for you for $3.99/mo., so if you can get at least $4 a month out of the people asking for a spot, why not do it? Adpeeps lets you set CPM and CPC pricing and allows advertisers to create their own accounts on your branded ad server and pay for spots, with or without your intervention.

LOL this is probably all gobbledegook to you... If I'm right and it is, it's probably not worth managing it yourself unless the payoff is much larger than just a few bucks a month - so I'd just say "no" to the person asking, then use the AdSense Gadget instead and let Google worry about it and send you a check every once in awhile.

There are a lot of ways you can set banner ad pricing, but the easiest way is to set a flat per month fee for a certain size graphic. When I was a design blogger, this is what I did... my traffic was around 4,000 unique visits a month and I sold a few side bar graphic banners for $40 a month. There's no set standard for what you charge for a banner ad, but higher traffic sites of course, are able to charge more and lower traffic sites charge less.  I've seen people go as low as $25 for a 125x125 square side bar banner.

If you receive good traffic, and you're serious about making income from advertising on your blog, you should look into joining an ad network.  Blogher runs a reputable one, and at one point I was a member of Clever Girls (who also offer opportunities to write sponsored posts). Other ad networks bloggers I know use include: CafeMom (, Federated Media (, and Social Spark (  

The most important thing is making sure whatever ads you show are reputable and of interest to your readers. I would never join an ad network that doesn't give me control over which advertisements show up on my blog.  I also don't really care for the link ads (which link to words within your copy) because I think it's distracting and spammy looking.

Final note... if your blog is hosted on a free blogging service, make sure you check the terms of use before adding any advertising. for example, doesn't allow outside ad networks, although they do offer their own ad network that you can sign up for.  Selling advertisement on a service that doesn't allow it can get your blog shut down.  If you're self hosted, however, you don't have to worry about it.

No, DO NOT GET MONEY INVOLVED. When you advertise on someone elses website, its more about forming bonds and connections with fellow book bloggers. When you add money to the equation it ends up being about business.

On top of that sidebar ads normally don't get allot of views, its completely depends on the blog. I suggest a blog button swap. You add my blog button, and I'll add yours- that kind of thing. Utterly money free.

I've got a banner exchange program going, too.

It aint nothing wrong with it. Most authors and celebs sell ad space on their sites. Some charges low as $5 some go as high as $500 a month. A lot of celebs like kim k, lindsay lohan, and heidi montag charges companies a couple thousand to plug thier products on their facebook, twitter page. It's called product placement. Heck i paid a rapper a couple hundreds to plug my book on his twitter page. And it boosted my book sales for a whole month. A lot of authors pay othwr authors to plug their books. So use this to your advantage. Some aurhors even pays for ad space in other successful authors book.
