Self publishing vs. Traditional

From experience what are the advantages of self publishing vs. Traditional publishing and would love to hear personal success stories

I did self publishing because people on the internet kept telling me that even if I wrote the golden query letter, if what I'm writing is not commercially accessible then I would be wasting my time. With the given that I have no intentions of becoming a best selling money making novelist in this lifetime, and that I write only to please myself in what I want to read, self publishing just seemed the right fit for me. Yet still, I have regrets that I did not at least try to query my work to allow for the chance to be rejected in the first place

Thanks for the insight and you have absolutely no idea that you would have been rejected keep writing and query this time and see what happens :)
