Anyone else completely bummed by the Sookie Stackhouse books? I love the genre and bought the boxed set and wanted to vomit after reading the first book. I was wondering what other people thought of the series....

Yes - I got the first 3 thinking they would be fun & for me they just aren't. There's something so cliched & fake chatty about them that it bummed me out.
No actually this is one of my favorite series. Dead Until Dark was the first Paranormal I read. I do find that people who have seen the tv show before reading the series don't like the books too well. But to each their own.
I actually have never seen the series, either, Maybe I just had expectations that were too high, but I had heard so many things and it was such a let down...
I bought the first four books when they were originally published and have loved each one as they came out. I've never seen the tv show series since I don't have HBO. I'm sorry that it was a disappointment to you but the shows or movies of books are never exactly alike. And did you really want to vomit after reading the first book? That sounds pretty harsh but like Anna said "to each their own."
Maybe vomit was a little harsh -- harsher than I would usually be. I appreciate how hard it is to write a book, and respect that people are going to have differences of opinion when it comes to their reading material of choice. But I was soooo bummed with the quality of the book...
I enjoyed the series although I didn't like book 1. It took people telling me to keep going to get to book 2 and then I got hooked.
I am on book 3 now, and I have to concede that the books have gotten better. Still not what I was expecting, but nowhere near as bad as the first one...
I am on the fifth book in the series. And yes, they are nowhere near as great as the television show. And there is so much ridiculous hype about the books, so I am sure you were expecting them to be groundbreakingly fabulous! And no, they're not. They are just supposed to fun, easy, vacation reads. If you take them for what they are, you might enjoy them more.
I have friends who adore the series. I've never tried. I can't get past the main character's stupid name.
I pre-ordered the TrueBlood HBO series through Barnes & Noble today. It comes out next Tuesday, May 19th and I am looking forward to seeing it for the first time after reading the first 9 books in the series.
I read the first book long ago, before the second book was out, and I've read them all since then. Sookie is not too smart but has a heart of gold, and has the ability to extracate herself from seemingly impossible situations. The books themselves are fairly simple, and the characters are pretty much one-dimensional, but they are fun for an afternoon of light reading. I've read some of Harris' other books, and the plots on the ones I have read are too simplistic and predictible for my taste; but whatever she is doing with the Sookie series seems to be working. I like the way we're finding out more about the inner workings of the vampire world, and meeting other "supes" like demons and fairie. I haven't seen the series, True Blood, but the actress playing Sookie looks spot-on!
I am at the end of the first one. A friend loaned it to me after I finished Twilight. While I don't love it, I don't hate it either. It would have been better had I not watched a few of the shows because Bill & Sookie (for me) have the potential to be an interesting character but the actors of the show (for me) not so much.
