Is anyone else attending the Book Expo and / or the Book Blogger Convention in May? This will be my first time going. I thought it would be a good idea to get to know some other people who are going before I venture out there alone...!

We'll be at the reception, which I think is Thursday, where authors, industry professionals, and book bloggers mingle. We were there last year and it was just fantastic to meet bloggers in person!

Permalink Reply by Skip O'Neal on March 16, 2011 at 3:29pm I went last year and will be going again. BEA is worth going to once for any serious reader. The book blogger convention was pretty interesting, mostly to meet people you only know online. I didn't find the sessions particularly helpful last year, but I know that they are working on making the blogging part more like a workshops with smaller, more focused groups.
If you are coming, wear comfortable shoes and bring big bags to take home a bunch or ARCs.

Permalink Reply by Elizabeth W. on March 16, 2011 at 3:31pm I'm definitely going to the Book Expo, and am finalizing plans (read: saving $ up) to pay the Book Blogger Convention fee. I'm local, and would love to meet up with others and/or provide city advice.
Advice #1 Bring an extra bag with you and/or plan to ship books home. you would not believe the number of books you can walk out of there with! :-)

It's my understanding that if you sign-up for the BBC, your entry fee to BEA is included. I could be wrong, but that's how it was last year.

Yep, hat's true!

Shipping from BEA itself to home is expensive! If you can manage it, bring the books back to your hotel/where you're staying and ship from a post office. I shipped from the w 34th streeet Post Office, down the road from The New Yorker hotel and saved 35.00.
I'm hoping more publishers have e-galley cards this year.
Permalink Reply by Christine Van Winkle on March 16, 2011 at 9:09pm That's a great point! I would hate to have to ship things home. Maybe just a bigger suitcase?!
How many publishers would you say did e-galley distribution last year?
Permalink Reply by Skip O'Neal on March 16, 2011 at 9:57pm Not too many did that I saw. I think HarperCollins did e-galleys exclusively, but most were still printed. I expect that to be dramatically different this year.

Just HarperColllins but I imagine Simon & Schuster will do some sort of e-galley this year. You could always give your card to a publicist and get a copy sent to you at home.
I DID bring a small suitcase in which I stuffed a dress and shoes. For my trip home, the books went in the suitcase (and another box was shipped home) and the dress was frankly smushed.
I brought home too many books last year.

I was planning on going, but I'm not sure what to expect. Did anyone go last year? :)

Permalink Reply by The Literary Lioness on March 19, 2011 at 8:12pm I might be able to go this year. I might. I want so badly to go. I live in New Jersey so I wouldn't have to worry about hotels (although if I could afford a hotel I would stay at one!)
The great thing is if you pay for the BBC you get free admission to the BEA! So if I go I'd go to all of it!
If I do go, I'd hope to meet some of you!
