Traditional Publishing Vs. Self Publishing through E-BOOKS.

Hi everyone. 

I was hoping to get some opinions on the subject of Traditional Publishing vs. E-book publishing. 

We all know there are those few people that have done very well publishing through e-books and it seems that they had to do to the fact that Agents were rejecting there work. I must admit, I wrote a book when I was younger, had it sitting on my laptop and figured why not, so I slapped it on Amazon's Kindle. 

I am writing a YA Series and am very excited about these books and the Ideas in my mind. 

My main question is... and a am not trying to offend any book agents or publishing houses, but...

How do you know that when you send your query out or a book proposal to an agent, they will not still your idea and pitch it to another author that they have under contract. I understand your writing is copywritten as soon as it is on paper or computer, but is your idea just a safe?

Would it be more beneficial to place your book on pub-it, amazon, or lulu rather than going through the process of trying to get an agents attention, and what if you get their attention, but they steal your idea?

Is this a probability?

Friends tell me that agents could do this...

what are your thoughts on the matter.

Literary agents and publishing companies are notoriously professional and have no interest in passing any writer's proposal or submitted work on to another, already contracted author.  It just doesn't happen.  Aside from this, the consequence would not be worth it on even the remote possibility, and most writers keep a record of dates and submissions (hence, the rejection wallpaper jokes among writers).  Any method of publishing holds its risks, because bootleg editions are out there, cheating both publishing companies and authors from due royalties.  If an agent or publisher likes your idea, you will be the first to know.

Hope this helps to dispel any concerns.
