How do you feel about the vampire genre?

Personally, I am not a vampire book kind of girl.
That being said, I did try the Meyer series and will admit I had trouble putting the first novel down once begun.  I took it with me to the beach and read from sun-up till sun-down.  From here on out I will always associate that novel with the most tan I’ve ever been (happiness itself).
I also tried out Robin McKinley’s vampire novel entitled Sunshine.  It is certainly a refreshing take on vampire literature.  Although it has its fair share of sensual moments, the book itself is far from a romance novel.  It feels less like a fairy tale and more like science fiction, focusing primarily on survival rather than a possible love story between human and vampire (in fact, I’m not entirely certain there was one).
Sunshine is set in an alternate universe, a world which is populated not only by humans but also vampires, werewolves, sorcerers, and demons (collectively referred to as the “Others”).   In fact, McKinley spends so much time developing the setting that the plot feels a bit slow.  It’s definitely not a page-turner.  She does, however, manage to create several lovable characters, not to mention the refreshingly humorous and self-deprecating thought-life of the heroine herself, Rae Seddon.

"...millions of people..."

You definitely got that right. I wonder why that is? The fascination with vampires is a real puzzler for me. I'm glad it gets people to read, but I honestly don't understand the fascination of it all. To me, it's almost equivalent to, say, someone writing a book series on plumbers (plumbers that sparkle, are incredibly strong, can fix plugged pipes in a split second, etc), and then suddenly everyone's gone plumber crazy.

I don't really like supernatural fiction - I prefer novels set in this world. I read (and liked) the Twilight series, because you can't be a YA-lover without having read those books, but I don't like many other vampire-books. Actually, I think the obsession with vampire-books (and supernatural fiction in general) has gotten kind of annoying - many of them just seem like Twilight-imitations.

The jury is still out on that one for me.

It seems no matter where I go the only thing I can find now are Vampire stories. Don't get me wrong I love vampires, they are sexy, sultry, strong, exciting... but getting old... I mean what more can anyone write about on vampires. I agree with someone who said they are all the same now. Some human falls madly in love with the sexiest vampire alive.

As a matter of fact I thought about picking up the twilight series, but if it is anything like the movie I wont be able to last long. I have not even seen anything pass the first twilight...
