Hi Cheryl!

It all depends on what your family and friends like to read. I'm a historical fiction blogger and reviewer so my expertice is more geared towards that; however, you can never go wrong with a Nicholas Sparks book for women.

For mystery Harlen Coban books are amazing! I've never read one that I couldn't put down.

If you are interested in Historical fiction or know someone who is I would recommened Pope Joan by Donna Wolfolk Cross. It's soon to be made into a motion picture.

I hope this sort of helps. Like I said before it depends on what genre they like to read :)

The first volume of Mark Twain's autobiography is a good place to start. C'mon, he waited 100 years to have it printed...he must have some good juice on someone...

Hi Cherly!

If you like romantic novels, read The Change by; Anna Y. White. I just read it this week and i liked it a lot. I usually dont read Romantic novels, but the reason i chose this one is, because it is played in Hungary, which is my home country :) and i just wanted to read something that is not as serious as i used to read. Basically I just wanted to relax my mind.

But anyway, the book is fantastic, it describes Budapest (the capital of Hungary) as it. And the whole book it self is focused on high end-University life, the life of a foreigner and the decisioned that he/she should make.

I dont know if you can buy it in hard copy, i have mine in Kindle format.

I hope i could help you with your choice. :)
I would definitely recommend buying The Help by Kathryn Stockett for any of the women you have on your list. It's a great novel about domestic maids during the civil rights movement. It's amazing!

I second the vote on The Help by Kathryn Stockett. The women in my family are still fighting over who gets to read it next! Such a great, worthwhile book! There wasn't a wasted page.
Hi Cheryl,

None newly published, but some favourites of mine:

Stone Junction by Jim Dodge - Gritty and magical, compelling, bizarre and colourful characters from a pre-computerised America. A great adventure. (Don't read the intro by Thomas Pynchon, it totally spoils it!)

Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson - Vivid characters connected by family, bouncing between modern-day cryptographic venture geeks to WWII Enigma code breakers and gung-ho heroes. In depth, amazingly researched, very believable and hugely entertaining.

Woman on the Edge of Time by Marge Piercy - A Utopian world experienced through some plausible 'time-travelling'. One of the best depictions of an idealist, anarchist society. Beautiful, moving, and inspiring.

If I get more time I'll post some more ideas

Woman on the Edge of Time sounds very interesting I may have to check this out!

I'd have to second the Mark Twain autobiography. It's release has been 100 years in the making. That fact alone makes the selection interesting!

Also, for those who enjoy humor, there's Jon Stewart Presents: Earth. A fun little romp across the globe, flavored with wryness and laughs.
I've already bought copies of SLK-Serial Killer, the brand new true crime thriller by author Ed Coet as Christmas gifts for select family members and friends who enjoy reading thrillers, mysteries, and true crime. The best price I found for this book was through the publisher's own bookstore ((http://www.publishamerica.net/product24820.html) although Barnes & Noble offers free shipping. I just finished reading this book in a marathon two-day session (it's over 500 pages long). It was so interesting, fascinating and intriging that I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend SLK-Serial Killer to you and others who appreciate and enjoy reading suspense, mystery, thrillers, and especially the true crime" genre's. Anyone who likes the TV show "Dexter" will love this book. SLK is a real life "DEXTER" kind of character.

There's an author named Ed Coet? Funny how these things work out. That just makes me more glad that I decided to use my full name, Edward L. Cote.

If you have mystery readers on your Christmas list, run over to The Murder Circle: http://www.sunnyfrazier.com/MurderCircle I just did a column on fun Christmas reads.
