If you like Stephanie Meyer, read the Host. I thought it was almost better than twilight.
If you want more vampires you could try Vampirates, which is a book about vampires that live on to be pirates on the high seas,
The Blood Ties series by Jennifer Armintrout is one of my favorites. The first book is called The Turning. I also loved Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost. As far as young adult books there is The Morganville vampires series, Vampire kisses, and Night World which is also by L.J. Smith.
I will be the 89324 person to recommend the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris.
Also I don't think anyone has recommended Mary Janice Davidson yet, her "Undead" series starts with "Undead and Unwed"
If you are OK with a strong romantic element (not erotica though) I would recommend JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series.
I was not into Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series because of the violence, wayyyy too gory for me.
LJ Smith (Vampire Diaries) wrote Night World as well, they are about both vampires/witches/shapeshifteres.
Also I'd go for :
House of Night
Vampire Academy
Blue Bloods
Peeps (Scott Westerfeild)
also Cassandra Clare's books aren't as dark, per say, but they feature vampires in sort of a minor role. They're really good and have a pretty good romantic plotline.
There is an author you may only find in used book section her name is Traci Briery . She did the Vampire Memoirs and The Vampire Journals and also two Werewolf books. I read her first one Vampire Memoirs in the 90's and have the other on a TBR pile . Amazon has copies of used ones for sale I believe.
I could be wrong, but I think the Brian Lumley Necronomicon books are based around Vampire mythology. It's been a while since I read any so I could be way off.
The House of night series by P.C and Kristin Cast is also about Vampires. The 1st book is called marked then youve got Betrayed, Chosen then soon they'll be Untamed.
I am a big fan of Laurell K Hamilton. While I prefer her faery series to her vampire hunter series, Anita Blake's world does suck you in. And it is a long series (the next installment, due out in June is book 17 I believe.)
You could also try the "Darkyn" series by Lynn Viehl.
Bear in mind that both of those suggestions contain a lot of graphic sex and violence and are intended for mature readers.
If you are looking for something more along the lines of young adult reading, my daughter just read the "Vampire Academy" books by Richelle Mead and really liked them. She is just starting on book one of the "Blue Bloods" series by Melissa De La Cruz and seems to be enjoying it as well.
