What was the book that changed your life as a child?

Whether it was Harriet the Spy or The Phantom Tollbooth - a child's first memories of books can shape a lifetime of reading. What did it for you?

Oh my goodness! I haven't seen this book in ages! This was one of my son's favorite books. It was passed to him by my cousin. Very cool! :)

I have to say that LITTLE WOMEN really shaped the way I think about the world. It's a book I think about almost every day, even now.

I LOVED Little Women. I was sick a lot as a kid, and I remember reading this, and re-reading it when I was bedridden. I never wanted it to end - and just like you, Miriam, I feel like its hold on me is ever-present.

Myrtle the Turtle. I think it was a Randy McNally Elf book. Loved it as a child. When I got pregnant with my first child, my husband scoured Ebay until he found an old copy (Plus twenty plus more Elf books) and had them all sent to me.

Well, there was this one, beautiful little book.
It was so small that only a young child could marvel in wonder at its beautiful little illustrations.

I believe the title was The Ballerina Kitty or simply Ballerina Kitty.

I can't find the book anywhere now. I had it when I was about 8 years old, but it really changed me and gave me hope.

This little book had a picture of the most beautifully illustrated, fluffy little white kitten standing on a stage, wearing a lovely little pink ballerina leotard, a pink tu tu and shiny little pink ballet slippers.

It was the most beautiful thing that I had ever owned up to that point!!
My parents bought it for me at school book fair, one of few that I was able to participate in as we grew up because we were quite poor.

When I looked through, read and re-read this darling little ‘kitty’ book, it filled me with hopes and dreams; that I could be that beautiful and graceful one day. It made me believe that I could be something and be someone, one day.

I've never forgotten this sweet little book.
It pulled me out of my sad surroundings and gave a cheerless, introverted little girl, hope!

Did anyone else read this book, or think they might have? :-)

Bobbie,
About what year did you get this book? Was it a Scholastic book fair?

I think it would have been 1988 maybe a year or so before or after that year. I'm not too sure.

Yes, I think it was a scholastic book fair. Why do you ask? :-)
