Many of you probably know about Wix already, but for those who don't...
I've dabbled with Blogger, Wordpress (did not like!), Dreamweaver, and Kompozer (free open-source Dreamweaver alternative - not nearly as powerful, but hey, free and legal), and I've gotta say, for building a basic website I'm really impressed with Wix.com.
I have no intention of moving my blog away from Blogger, but I decided to give Wix a try for upgrading my "official author" site. I do have a little bit of background with web design, but only as much as an intro course at a community college provides, so - just the very basics.
And it only took me two days to customize Wix's author template, which looks like this...
...into my own personalized site, which looks like this:
Oh, and the best thing about Wix (in my opinion)?
It's free. Not sure if it will still be free when it's out of beta - I remember when Wordpress was free - but for now, anyway, it's free.
In case you're wondering, I'm not affiliated with Wix in any way (except for having a website with them, obviously). I'm just really impressed with the design tools, and wanted to pass the word along. These days, having a strong web presence is about as essential as having a good business card used to be, but it's not nearly as easy to make a website as it is to make a business card.
I had my eye on SquareSpace also, before Wix beat 'em to the punch; has anyone had experience with them or any other design-your-own web service worth a plug?
I'v never heard of Wix but your site looks great. You did a great job on it.
Agreed. Your site looks great! Well done. :)
wow, i must try Wix, I used to like Dreamweaver MX, but the updates have gotten too costly and complicated. I shall give wix a go.
I use Wix too - it's fabulous and like you said ~ FREE!
Your site looks fantastic! I've used Wix a couple of times but switched to Wordpress my personal favorite, especially since it works better for my needs (what with all the plugins and such). Great job on your site!
Your site looks amazing. I use Weebly, it fits my needs and is also free.
Have try http://www.weebly.com/? I have two sites with them and was very impress with them! Check it out! Let me know what you think.
I use Weebly as well. Started out using WIX but needed some extra features and the ability to alter the HTML and CSS if I wanted to. Weebly also has some very good support forums that can help solve nearly any problem. For most all applications either WIX or Weebly will produce a high quality site that will meet user needs.
Yes, the lack of direct-edit functionality on Wix is a definite limitation. I have no idea if they plan to add that functionality in later, but I kind of think that their average user would make a hopeless mess with direct-edit so my guess is, no, it will stay drag and drop only.
Your site looks great. After seeing this post I looked at wix myself and did my own site. I have it fairly basic at the moment, www.thesilentsaga.com but it does the job. Thanks for pointing me there.
Not bad! You need a higher-resolution image for your cover art though.
