Welcome to Nightshade After Dark Fantasy & Reviews of Gothic fiction that originated in the late 18th century when Horace Walpole published his novel "The Castle of Otranto." The genre became popular and has evolved through the works of such authors as Ann Radcliffe, Edgar Allan Poe and Daphne Du Maurier. The genre is characterized by an eerie setting such as an old family estate, heightened passions and emotions, incidents such as rape and murder and often a supernatural element such as prophecies or visions and the appearance of ghosts. Writing in the Gothic mode requires you to construct a basic narrative plot of characters and conflicts that involves these elements.
