Science fiction research

I have been working on a  Speculative Fiction & Political Thought research project for the past ten years, and due to a lack of funds have been doing so on my free time and my own resources, but I have reached a point in the development of the project where I feel I have enough to start working on the publishing of my findings. However before I do that, and since I have no institutional backing, I am turning to the web for aid in fine tuning some of the things I have found. The greatest roadblock I have run into is the definition of Science Fiction, any recommendations on background bibliography I could use?

 

I'd really appreciate any help you can give me on this.
