How do we know what we know? “What is appearance only—and what is reality?” It is a tried and true philosophy question, but it is rare that a novel would ask the same question.
A new “philosophical novel” by Caroline Miller, does precisely that.
Miller’s third novel is set in France in the 1960s during the French/Algerian war. The suspense grows as a young American woman, Rachel Farraday takes a job with a French socialite who possess a sizeable inheritance and crumbling chateau. But her patron is killed mysteriously, and Rachel discovers she has co-inherited the estate with the woman’s handsome young cousin, a patient at a nearby mental asylum. As the American adjusts to her new life and new partner, an encroaching world of delirium, hallucination and intoxication poses a threat to her. The lines between reality and time become blurred as Rachel struggles to discover if she is the center of a conspiracy or involved with a man whose insanity may endanger her life.
