I agreed to host a giveaway on my blog for a book I hadn't read yet, but had read plenty of favorable reviews of.

The problem is that I'm about 4th of the way through the book and really, really don't like it. I don't think I can give this book a favorable review on my site and I'm not sure about continuing to host the giveaway for a book I don't want to endorse.

I know I should contact the rep. who sent me the book and let her know that I want to back out of the giveaway, but how can I do this without burning any bridges?

Thanks!

I have had this same issue.  After speaking with the publicist, I did a mini review and said the book wasn't for me, but still hosted the giveaway.

How detailed were you in the mini review about how you felt about the book? I'm just trying to figure out how much is too much for my review.

I agree with Mary. Just because you didn't like the book it doesn't mean that someone else won't love it. Between me and my friends, alot of us have completely different tastes in authors. Some of the books they read I just wouldn't bother with. So be honest in your review, and probably keep it brief just adding an outline of the plot, just saying that although you know it's not for you, another reader might find it's right up their street! You can say why you didn't like it, as what bothers you about the book someone else might be happy to overlook.

If I see a book review on Amazon that's just 1 or 2 stars, it wouldn't put me off buying the book as I like to make my own opinion and I'm sure majority of us are like that too.

Your honesty is a credit to you.

I will review the book and state that I did not finish it.  I usually rate my books from 1-5 but don't if I don't finish.  I put DNF (did not finish).  I say why I didn't finish it and what I didn't like about it.  I also try really hard to find something nice about it to give a balances and honest review.  As for the giveaway, I would say something like "even though this book wasn't for me perhaps one of my readers would like it and do the giveaway.  Unless, there was something in the book that was totally against an ethical issue for me.  For instance, If it was non-fiction and supported the fur industry, forget it.  Although I would usually know something like that before I accept the book.

I sent an email to the PR agent with my concerns Wed. night, and she seemed fine calling off the giveaway. A part of me does regret the decision. I never host giveaways on my site and it just felt too weird giving away a book I didn't like.

I'm chalking this up to a learning experience. Hopefully next time I won't back out so impusively. Thanks for all the advice though.

Very very thrilled to welcome L.J. Sellers. She is touring for her latest bookThe Arranger on the virtual space and since I have read the book i'd say she has done a great job - a clever manipulation of the scenarios in the book. I would definitely suggest you people to try it. Well without a further wait....I present before you all the good stuffs.....read on and be surprised.
