Twitter is a great place to make connections with other book bloggers and to promote your blog. There are tons of us on Twitter now and it's so much fun! I thought I'd link over to some various resources to help you out.

Five Twitter applications and tools.

Friend or follow. I use this one a lot. I just unfollowed 50 people who were not following me back and I felt like were just boging down my timeline. It also makes me sad because there are like 20-30 bloggers who I wish were following me but aren't.

I love Twitter Counter. I use it to put a badge on my blog of the number of followers I have. Also, it confirmed that as soon as I put a custom background on, my follower numbers shot straight up.

Creating custom Twitter backgrounds. I love to see custom backgrounds, especially ones that match the blog.

I have liked using TweetGrid to follow hashtags because it updates in real time.

Okay, that's all for now. But there are a lot more out there. What do you use to help you out on Twitter or to integrate your blog?

You've answered the question of "how am I going to spend my afternoon?" !! I joined Twitter in the past week, and have a lot to learn ... thanks for all the tips and links.

I have a question about your comment above, 20-30 bloggers who you wish were following you but aren't. ... Is it poor etiquette (twitiquette?) to just ask someone to follow you? Last week I realized I couldn't DM someone who wasn't following me, and I wanted to take our conversation "offline", not because it was personal, but because after a few back-and-forths (and no one else joining in), I thought we might just be making noise to others with our discussion. I've seen some long-winded Twitter conversations that probably would be better as DMs.

So, what do you think? Poor etiquette? Pushy? Why don't you ask?

It's not considered poor etiquette to follow people you don't know... it's a way to find people with similar interests and such :o)

I find that a lot of people with follow you in hopes that they will follow you back even though your interests are so off track from each other. For them, it's about the numbers game. Eventually they'll unfollow you when they realize that your tweets have no value for them. Value meaning = wrong interest. I get a lot of follows and then they unfollow later when I don't follow back.

I think if you want to DM them, then it's not a problem for you to ask them to follow you. But if I don't need to DM them then I feel funny asking them to follow me. But if you respond back to their tweets often enough, and they respond back, I suppose it's fine to ask them to follow you.

Thanks for these great tips... I can see that I'll be spending time developing a landing page. TwiiterSnooze is great, thanks!

Is there any kind of very basic guide for new twitter users? How to put a button on your blog? How to talk to other twitterers without sending a personal notice?

Reply to This

Subscribe to TwiTip and go through his archives. I know he does have a very basic getting started guide. I'll look for it and post if I find it.

As far as buttons - are you looking for a widget that says what you're doing or just something that points to your profile. For buttons, check out Twitter Buttons or this twitter button article that points to you a lot of lists,

I'm not sure what you mean by "w/o sending a personal notice."

A new and really comprehensive (pages and pages) list of Twitter buttons. There are some VERY creative logos here and many that I have never seen before. Not your average twitter logos: http://www.twitterlogos.com/
