I've been approached and have accepted at least 4 books to review personally by the author of the book. They always ask me to be completely honest in my reviews no matter if I loved it or hated it. That is what I try to convey with all the authors books that I've read.

I agree. I do the same thing.

As editor of bookpleasures.com, I always tell my reviewers to be honest with their reviews. However, I do encourage constructive criticism. We try not to murder the author or the book and from the feed-back I have received, authors and publicists appreciate our honesty.

Hi,
Honesty of course is very important, but tact and objecticity are important as well. I think lately there's a lot of emphasis on honesty in reviewing (and this came about because online reviewers were getting so much criticism for being unfairly positive), and while this is great, being honest should go along with those other two qualitites. For instance, a poorly written book about a violinist may still be of interest to violinists and musicians, and a reviewer should point this out in a fair review.
