Epic Fantasy

This group is for reviewers & readers of good old epic fantasy. Not that we don't love paranormal and urban fantasy, but epic fantasy needs its own nook, complete with swords, sorcery, elves, dwarves, other worlds, and all that sort of stuff.

Hi, guys, Edward L. Cote. Some of you have probably seen me around.

It's debatable as to whether I'm writing truly "epic" fantasy, but I certainly enjoy the genre, between Jordan, Martin, Zelazny, and others. I've started reading The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson as well.

Hello everyone!  I joined a while ago, but have yet to introduce myself.  I am so happy to have found a group that loves epic fantasy!

You're right, Essord. My goal is to see this group grow into a thriving metropolis. Just a matter of time.

Welcome, BookGirlR. I'm happy to see some other reviews here than mine ;-).

And Christopher, our mini-team is gradually growing. I'm sure we will become much bigger.

Hey BookGirlR, glad to have you join this mini-team! Your review of the Sentinel Mage is very intriguing. Sounds like a great book. I'm adding it to my tbr pile.

I love REAL fantasy too!  I'm always disappointed when I go into a bookstore and the science fiction and fantasy section is full of paranormal and urban fantasy.  Not that I don't like that stuff but sometimes I'm just in the mood for a good Epic Fantasy novel, or series.

I just reviewed a great fantasy novel on my blog.  You can check it out here.  It's The Sentinel Mage by Emily Gee.

My review of Watcher Of The Dead by J.V. Jones, the fourth book of Sword Of Shadows.

Essord, your comment on vampire/paranormal fantasy being more chick-lit fantasy than YA is right on the money. Actually, I think I'd go a step further with that and say they are more chick-lit than fantasy itself. The introduction of that kind of story into the fantasy genre has kind of blurred the traditional distinctions of that genre.

If you want one example of epic fantasy that is does not fit in the bygone times/settings frame I can name Terry Brooks' Word & Void and Shannara series which play in the now and future. There are other examples as well. I do not limit fantasy within certain boundaries. To me science fiction is also a form of fantasy. There are novels to be found where it is hard to distinguish between both genres.

My small word on YA fantasy: according to the definition its meant for ages 14-21. When I was 14 there was no real YA section at my library. I just picked up the fantasy/SF books from the adult section. Many bookstores here put YA fantasy in between the adult fantasy, so that it doesn't make much of a difference for a buyer.

I've always thought YA to be an odd classification. Many 'adult' fantasy series would fall into that category as having young protagonists is quite common, while some classified as YA sometimes feel as barely fitting considering the events in the story. Some YA novels I've read were just as good for 'adult' readers.

Either way, I consider many of the vampire and paranormal fantasies more as chicklit fantasy than YA as they seemed to be aimed at girls/women and not at YA in general.
