Thanks to a post, by Harvee Lau, at the very beginning of this blog, I am now a huge fan of Alan Bradley and Flavia de Luce.  I have blazed through the first four books and I am now on Speaking from among the Bones

The Next Big Thing:

Author self-interview by Kathie Giorgio

WHAT IS THE WORKING TITLE OF THE BOOK?

Learning To Tell (A... Life)Time. But it’s not the working title, it’s THE title. The book is finished and will be released on 9/1/13.

WHERE DID THE IDEA COME FROM?

This is the sequel to my first novel, The Home For Wayward Clocks. So you could say the idea came from there.  However, when I finished that book and went on tour with it, I had no intention of writing a sequel.  By the time Clocks came out, I’d been out of What Cheer (the town in the book) for three years.  I had no ideas and no ambition to return.  Then, six months after Clocks’ release, I was at a warm stone massage.  As I melted into the massage bed, heat all around and under me, my face tucked into that circle pillow, I suddenly saw an opening line scrolling across my closed eyelids.  “Cooley never expected to cry when her mother died.”  By the time I left that 90-minute massage, I knew the sequel started 16 years after the end of the first book, Cooley was now 32, James, the main character from the first book, passed away years before, Ione was in a retirement home…and Cooley’s mother just died.  Like that, the book was born.

WHAT GENRE IS IT?

This is a novel, in the literary genre.

WHAT ACTORS WOULD YOU CHOOSE TO PLAY THE PARTS OF YOUR CHARACTERS IN A MOVIE RENDITION?

This is such a hard question!  I see Cooley so clearly. Maybe Goldie Hawn, maybe Meg Ryan…but they’re both too old.  So I guess I’d go with Goldie Hawn’s daughter, Kate Hudson.  Cooley’s mother, Mara Rose, appears at the age of ten at the beginning of the book, and she’s fifty-two by the end, so I can’t really pinpoint an actress for her. And Ione…Ione could be Maggie Smith, without the accent.

WHAT IS THE ONE-SENTENCE SYNOPSIS OF YOUR BOOK?

Learning To Tell (A Life)Time shows how monsters are not born, but they’re made, and it’s about how a daughter’s love for her mother can survive even when forgiveness can’t.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO WRITE THE FIRST DRAFT?
Just over a year.  It took just under two years to finish it.  It was an amazing and very intense two years.  The book took me over.

“Survival of the Unfittest isn’t you’re typical Zombie novel. It tells the story through someone who gets infected, and has to deal with life with only being able to eat flesh.”

Blurb of the book:

When a paralegal named Jacob becomes violently ill after a business trip to New York. He quickly finds that he contracted a virus that mutates his DNA to only allow him to eat raw meats. It’s not too bad until the meat industry is on it’s knees from lack of meat, and Jacob runs out. He finds himself having vivid dreams of attacking people, and eating them like an animal. When he wakes up, he finds out the dream wasn’t just a dream. This recollection of Jacob’s journey to survive will guide you through the adventures, and mis-adventures of Jacob’s survival. Constantly on the run from a Anti-Mutation group called The Control Group, and fighting his inner-demons to not kill, but knowing to survive he must be willing to do anything. All goes well until his city runs out of meat, and all the butchers are closing shop. He starts to go hungry, and starts having these vivid dreams about attacking people, and eating their flesh and muscle. His supervisor has also contracted the mutation, and eyes one of the new girls as someone he may be interested in. Jacob has to find a balance between survival and compassion towards other humans. How will he survive as a anti-zombie group gives chase after him, and his infected friends?

Guardian_spirit

My new fantasy humor book The Guardian Spirit is now available FREE here on Smashwords.

The book is about an Angel’s apprentice and is part of a trilogy. The second part will be out in the Summer and the concluding part in the Autumn.

It’s not easy being an Angel’s apprentice, as Owen is soon to find out. He has recently entered the Malak, an angel academy set up by angels cast out of heaven for displeasing God (casting out was God’s last resort, he had previously tried sending them to sit at the foot of the heavenly stairs). The academy Angels have high expectations – particularly around mop control (you must never mop with the stick end of the mop – it is absolutely forbidden). And this is nothing compared to what Owen now faces on his mission for the “Greatest Angel of the Land” (title patented by said Angel). For one thing the mission is not very nice. It involves a decapitated head. And for another he is accompanied by a dragon with a tendency to talk too much. And finally it involves uncovering a dark secret, a secret that threatens the very fabric of existence (yes once again the fabric of existence is threatened – it’s clearly not a very tough fabric – but what can do? If you argue back with God he makes you sit at the foot of the stairs.)

If you like books about angels (particularly angels with obsessive compulsive disorder), books about dragons (particularly dragons with an unacceptable crush on a member of royalty) and books about a monkey king (particularly one who wields a pick and NOT a wrench) then happily this is the book for you.

Jupiter Rising – Debuting 1 March 2013

BookCoverPreview3The fears of generations are realized in a brilliant flash in the shadowy wastes beyond Jupiter. From a mysterious array appear two alien ships, their vicious intention all too clear as they fall upon a pair of Terran ships battling over ownership of the enigmatic discovery.

They come from Gliese 581g where, in 2008, a message of peace was sent. They are an avenging force, unleashed to deliver a terrible retribution upon a trusted industrial magnate and secret liaison who is now determined to steal their technology. The aliens are powerful, technologically advanced by many decades, and determined to end the  human threat.

Captain Ian Walker, recently retired from NASA and at the end of a career that saw him removed from his last command in disgrace, is called back because of his rare combat experience and is given command of the elderly monitor, NASS Centaurus.  Captain Corina Sacramento, her crew exhausted and her ship worn out after completing a seven month asteroid survey for the South American Space Agency is waylaid from her return mission to Earth and redeployed to the Jovian moon of Himalia. Commodore Sorscha Cameron, former commander of the European cruiser, Indomptable, is given a field promotion and the impossible task of holding the Jovian System.

Their mission is simple – they are to join the United Nations task group assigned to protect the Terran interests in the Jovian System and shield the excavation of an alien spaceship buried in the ice of Europa. As the Gliesiuns amass a powerful force, and the  spacefaring nations of Earth, Luna, and Mars argue over control of defences, all three must fight feelings of self-doubt and fear to rally their task group to defend the future of mankind in the outer solar system.

Jupiter Rising will be available on Amazon and Kindle Select on 1 March 2013.

DISCOVER AUTHORS

Discover the lovable characters in my book Mr. Tea and the Traveling Teacup.  The book is published by Cozy Cat Press.  It is available on the Nook, the Kindle and paperback.

After the death of their mother, sisters Terry and Karen Sutter, turn their childhood home into a teahouse. It’s a dream come true, but the dream begins to resemble a nightmare when teacups start crashing to the floor in the middle of the night. Could the teahouse be haunted? There’s a list of possible ghostly candidates: the prior owner who is rumored to have left behind a buried treasure, two spinster neighbors who disappeared without a trace over forty years ago, or perhaps it is Terry and Karen’s own mother trying to communicate with them. Karen, the older sister, thinks running a haunted teahouse might be fun, until the sisters come home one night to find the attic stairs covered in a trail of what appears to be blood. Is it a ghost or is it a warning? The teahouse’s new mascot, a psychic macaw, may provide some unexpected clues, but the sisters will encounter many more surprises before they solve this mystery.
