BRAIN ON FIRE: November 13, 2012

Free Press is offering Brain On Fire: My Month of Madness by Susannah Cahalan for our next blog tour!

One day, Susannah Cahalan woke up in a strange hospital room, strapped to her bed, under guard, and unable to move or speak. Her medical records—from a month-long hospital stay of which she had no memory—showed psychosis, violence, and dangerous instability. Yet, only weeks earlier she had been a healthy, ambitious twenty-four year old, six months into her first serious relationship and a sparkling career as a cub reporter.

Susannah’s astonishing memoir chronicles the swift path of her illness and the lucky, last-minute intervention led by one of the few doctors capable of saving her life. With sharp reporting drawn from hospital records, scientific research, and interviews with doctors and family, Brain on Fire is a crackling mystery and an unflinching, gripping personal story that marks the debut of an extraordinary writer.

If you would like to participate, please email for a review copy of Brain on Fire. We ask that you post your review on November 13th and not earlier. U.S. and Canada only.

MARMEE & LOUISA: November 6, 2012

For our next blog tour, Free Press is offering Marmee & Louisa: The Untold Story of Louisa May Alcott and Her Mother by Eve LaPlante.

Since its release nearly 150 years ago, Louisa May Alcott’s classic Little Women has been a mainstay in American literature, while passionate Jo March and her calm, beloved “Marmee” have shaped generations of young women. Biographers have consistently credited her father, Bronson Alcott, for Louisa’s professional success, assuming that this outspoken idealist was the source of her progressive thinking and remarkable independence.

A story guaranteed to turn all previous scholarship on its head, Marmee & Louisa is a gorgeously written and deeply felt biography of two extraordinary women and a key to our understanding of Louisa May Alcott’s life and work.

If you would like to participate, please email for a review copy of Marmee & Louisa. We ask that you post your review on November 6th and not earlier. U.S. and Canada only.

"Secrets of the Ghosts-The Sleeper"
Book one in a Trilogy! Sneak Peek!

Rebecca says with force, “To hell with playing nice—that’s all we ever did for this government! Are we free or do they make all our decisions? I am not letting anyone t
ake my niece. Who knows what will happen—we might never see her again!” She is on her feet pacing with her fists balled up. Rebecca’s words are like fire coming from her mouth.

Tia speaks and she is really emotional.
“Why is there this urgency with Ava? I think she is hiding something. There has to be more to this,” Tia says with curiosity.
I never speak, but when she says that I wonder if this has anything to do with the warning I got from David. The memo did say that I was a sleeper—one of the best they have seen. I have to figure out how the sleeper issue and Evey are connected, for now I will keep this to myself until the connection is made..
“What are we going to do?” Delores asks while rubbing my back.
We all get up and try to figure what the plans are for now.
“I think the best thing right now is defense,” Joy replies.
I am not sure if I can go along with that idea. If we wait for Ava to strike, then it may be too late for my Evey. Before I can show my concern, Orenda has my same thought and speaks.
“No—we can’t wait. That is a bad mistake. We need to take the offense and see what the plans are and who is behind this. What if the boss of the cleaners has no idea?”
“What if he does? They all could be behind this. We could be in this by ourselves,” I reply. I feel like we are in this alone and the more I think about Ava taking my baby, the more a sense of certainty comes over me.

What a fascinating book. My review of Brain on Fire. A deadly undiagnosable disease memoir but written by the journalist who experienced it.
