1. Why did you begin writing?
My love for writing started at age 14 when I had to write poem for a class assignment. And I realized it was something that I was good and something a enjoyed doing. But career wise I didn’t start writing professionally until after I won an award for my poem Life.
2. Tell us about your books. Where can we buy them?
I have a few books published, but for the purpose of this blog I want to talk about my poetry book Water For the Soul. A lot of the poems that I had written when I was little have helped me when I got older. It amaze me how one can write something down out of nowhere, but end up going through it when they get older. So I decided to release this book to help other people overcome their problems, whether it has to do with death, love, or even fears. That’s why I decided to call it Water for the Soul.
Water For the Soul can be purchased at my website www.isiahhurts.webs.com , Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and it can be requested at any book store.
3. What is the biggest challenge you face with your writing career?
Getting my books in the main stream seems to be a big challenge. I write because I love writing. I’ve been writing as a hobby for several years, but I’ve been writing professionally I’d say since 2009. However, the book industry isn’t what it used to be, let’s say ten years ago. Although I have a few books published, I still struggle with book promotion and wanting to see my career go further ahead then what it is. I do book signings, I promote through social media, I’ve even done internet radio interviews. But honestly, I’d like to see my hard work pay off more than what it has. But I’m in this writing game for the long haul, mostly because writing is a deep passion for me. I won’t ever give up on it. It’s what I was meant to do.
4. What advice do you have for aspiring authors?
You really have to love writing in order to stay in this game. You have to be consistent with your book promotion. You have to really believe in your talent. Think about the message you are trying to get across with your book. Connecting with other authors is very important. Learn from others. Read! Read! Read! It surprises me how many authors don’t really read that much. Reading perfects your writing talent. It keeps the creative juices flowing. Read in various genres as well. And lastly, always keep perfecting your craft.
5. What’s next for you?
I’m working on a new poetry book called Forbidden fruits which is a lot deeper than my first poetry book Water For the Soul. I have really improved my writing a lot since my first poetry book, and have more to talk about. I’m also working a on a new cook book called Isiah Favorite Meals And Treats. Based off of my first cook book Isiah Classic Food. I also wrote a poetry book called Memories which I gave away for free on line.
