“A smart, dazzlingly original series opener…Weaving fractals and chaos theory into an international mystery that also confronts great moral and theological questions, Rosen crafts a literate, complex tale in this first of a series; a prequel will be next.”
--Library Journal
"...promising first novel deftly mixes mathematical puzzles, international intrigue, social upheaval, and religious zealotry...readers, especially the mathematically inclined, will relish this intellectually provocative whodunit."
--Publishers Weekly
“Calling all fans of fractals, international-criminal conspiracies and the End of Days: Your ship has come in.”
--Kirkus Reviews
In ALL CRY CHAOS (The Permanent Press, September 2011), the suspense begins with the assassination of mathematician James Fenster, whose work studying the patterns in nature (similarities between lighting bolts and tree limbs) leads to his death on the eve of the World Trade Organization congress. The murder sends veteran Interpol Inspector Henri Poincaré on a high-stakes, multi-continent search that implicates Fenster’s ex-fiancée, a former graduate student, the founder of a successful mutual fund, and the leader of a radical political cell advocating for indigenous rights. Readers are compelled not only to find out who killed Fenster—and why, but also to ponder what is ultimately a theological puzzle. If patterns cross categories in nature and extend, even, to human domains like economics, must there be a Pattern Maker?
ALL CRY CHAOS is not written by a household name, doesn’t have a six-figure marketing budget, and is not being published by one of the big six publishing houses. The author, newcomer Leonard Rosen is a successful writer of textbooks and a contributor to NPR. The publisher is a small but well-respected literary press. We believe the book deserves your attention in part because it is unlike anything you may have read before -- a genre-bending work that combines the science of Michael Crichton, the suspense of John LeCarre, and the page-turning drive of Dan Brown, and in part because of all the pre-publication excitement surrounding it. Foreign rights have been sold in Spain, Turkey, (French) Canada and the Netherlands.
Len Rosen has written a masterful novel combining beautifully crafted language, large themes, and unforgettable characters with pacing that rockets readers to a profoundly satisfying conclusion.
