I posted my review of The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaimen on Alison's Book Marks this morning.
This book was challenged at the middle school in my district. It was on the summer reading list. A neighbor had told me about the challenge, wondering if...
I'm the Alison behind Alison's Book Marks, a book review blog. When I'm not reading, I'm writing. When I'm not doing those things, I'm playing with my kids or talking them into not killing one another.
I am the national bestselling author of six critically acclaimed novels and have twice been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction.
On Jan 9th, 2010 my debut novel, SUGAR will celebrate its 10th anniversary and in order to commemorate this milestone I am campaigning to sell 10,000 copies between now and that date.
“Bernice L. McFadden's first novel begins with the brief, poetic description of a crime so startling that the reader is helplessly drawn in, as if a bright red door stood ajar on a bleak and forbidding house. Pearl Taylor's daughter, Jude, has been found murdered and mutilated near a field at the edge of town. "The murder had white man written all over it," writes McFadden. "But no one would say it above a whisper. It was 1940. It was Bigelow, Arkansas. It was a black child. Need any more be said?" In the years that follow, Pearl catches sight of Jude in so many strangers that when Sugar Lacey comes to town and sets up her unwholesome "business" in the house next door, she doesn't know whether to believe what she sees in Sugar's face: a striking similarity to Jude, dead 15 years. In her sedate but supple prose--rising at times to a light, unforced lyricism in the description of landscape or character--the author perfectly renders the closed and protective society of a small Southern town, the superstitions, gossip, and prying.”
I’m asking that you purchase a copy of SUGAR for yourself, a friend or family member. And if you could help spread the word by blogging, twittering ad Face-booking my campaign, it would mean the world to me.
I haven't read it (sorry, delayed response...) but I hear it's OK, not as good as Glass Castle. I'll give it a shot, though. I like to decide for myself whether I like a book. And, I love her style! Best, Jen
I know its so funny how we are all connected through our blogs! I love blogging about books so much, its always fun to meet other book lovers out there!
Hi Alison- you've thrown me a lifeline. I think I really needed to connect with another book lover today. Thanks for the sweet remarks about my blog. I've been on a reading streak of Roddy Doyle books and I think I'll blog about those next. And joining this group and meeting someone!
warmly, rachel
Hey Alison - love the name and the spelling-
I have only had a blog for one month or so, but Valerie does contact me back via email. Did you post the giveaway on your blog and then email her the link? What I would do it just send her an email with the link (again if u already did) and ask a question like...does this look okay? I think she will answer. She actually just emailed a question I sent to her today from my yahoo account. Love your blog! come visit mine!
Hi Alison nice to connect to you. I am from Bergen County, specifically Ramsey on the border of NJ and NY state. I live in Myrtle Beach, SC. I miss it. But don't think I would go back.
Hi Alison,
I'd be honored if you'd check out my work at My website - click here
You can download my ebooks for free there. If you'd choose to write a review, I'd be totally jazzed.
God bless!!
